Cheryl wasn't sat near the front in her biology class so it made it a lot easier to reapply her make-up without her teacher catching her. She hadn't realised how much of a mess her face had gotten, mascara had ran down her cheeks as though it had been chasing her tears, her foundation had came off when she'd wiped her tears away.
It was times like these that she was thankful that she carried a make-up bag in her purse.
Cheryl's mind drifted to Veronica as she quietly applied her foundation in soft streaks, she wondered why Veronica had been so nice; others would see her crying and walk back out sniggering about it. Frankie who'd been assigned to sit beside her at the back, made a hissing noise, signalling that their teacher was approaching and in no time her make-up was on her lap under the table out of view.
Cheryl was wary about the fact that she'd only managed to cover up one side of her face that she'd smudged so she rested her face in her hand, shielding her cheek where the make-up had been ruined. You see, even when your brother gets murdered, the teachers don't give you a pass, you're treated just like everyone else except your life is the one falling apart. The moment her Mrs Green stopped patrolling the room, Cheryl finished off her face, shooting a thanks to Frankie. Once Cheryl had stuffed her make-up back in her bag to focus on her lesson for once, her mind got nagged away once again, leaving the girl unable to concentrate, her thoughts only on the back of the brunette's head a couple of rows ahead. Cheryl sort of wish Veronica had been assigned to sit beside her, something intrigued her about Veronica Lodge, something that told her the brunette wasn't like the other girls in Riverdale; she was different.
Once class had finished, she gathered her stuff up as always ready to leave except this time when she looked up from her desk, her eyes found a smiling soft, kind brunette waiting for her. Cheryl felt a little dumbstruck, she wasn't used to having people actually want to walk with her without her actually just parading up to them and not bothering to ask. But Veronica stood before her, waiting for her to walk around the desk, she must've noticed the look on Cheryl's face because her smile faded a little, worried she'd overstepped some sort of line.
"You don't mind my company, do you?"
"No of course not," Cheryl winced at how quick she answered, trying to smooth it over. She didn't know why she was so nervous all of a sudden, she rarely got nervous. She was more of the confident one. "I uh, mean you were really nice to me earlier, so of course I don't mind."
Veronica's cheery smiled seemed to appear on her face, glad with Cheryl's answer and she slipped her arm through Cheryl's; the redhead's eyes bugged out, she flinched at the sudden contact she hadn't expected Veronica to want to walk together with linked arms. Veronica eyed Cheryl when she saw her flinch slightly at Veronica's action, but she didn't pull away so Veronica didn't remove her arm. She was naturally a touchy person and by what she knew about Cheryl so far, the redhead wasn't. Cheryl hadn't just noticed Veronica's good looks and personality when she met her, she found herself more fascinated by the girls fashion sense, it was remarkable, Cheryl had only seen the girl in a few outfits so far but each of them were beautiful, elegant and classy all at once, the pearls adding an extra touch to that. She wondered what the story was behind the pearls, Veronica never took them off unless it was for the River Vixens. It was the only time she saw her without them and also the only time she saw the girl wearing something other than a cute dress. Cheryl thought she looked perfect in either one of the clothing, Veronica was just one of those people who could pull off anything.
"So red, I hear you're a big shot around here? I don't really see it, the things that people say about you, I've been her a few days and so far you've gone from spiteful bitch to well...someone I quite like..." Veronica spoke, shooting a look to the tall girl walking closely beside her, she could see how tense she was and it made her wonder, Cheryl had been tense when Veronica was hugging her earlier and from what she could tell Cheryl had been bottling up her emotions and avoiding all human contact when possible. But Veronica was going to get her out of that slump.
Cheryl let a short laugh escape from her lips, not looking down at Veronica. "In high school you've got to show people whose the boss otherwise you get treated like filth on the ground, I simply put on my spiteful bitch phase when it's needed which is often. But..." Cheryl peered down at Veronica, catching her already staring once more, causing the corners of her mouth to lift. "You intrigue me too, no one stands up to me. Not even the boys...mostly because it was out of respect to Jason, he uh...he used to hit whoever laughed or bothered me."
Veronica listened, eyes lowering to the dirt ridden flooring below them, giving Cheryl's arm a gentle squeeze, trying to show her that she was there. "Cheryl...I'm so sorry about your brother, w-what happened to him was awful, it was inhumane and whoever did it won't get away with it, they'll find them."
Cheryl hadn't heard many people mourn for her brother, he was popular and kind and people loved him, but the whole town knew the Blossom family hated grieving and it was in everyone's best interest not to piss off the Blossom's. Cheryl playfully nudged Veronica's shoulder as though she'd know her forever, rather than just a few days.
"Thank you...you're the only one whose said something like that, you know?...although Betty did try but I just treated her like dirt as usual. I just can't help it. Last time I saw Jason he was heading off to meet Polly--"
"Betty's sister." Veronica finished for her, she didn't judge, she knew nothing about Betty's sister and she knew that it seemed suspicious that Jason was supposed to meet Polly. So Veronica didn't interpret her opinion, mainly because she had none, she'd just moved here and already someone was murdered. Sometimes she wondered whether her mum was going to wake up one day and tell her to pack her back, tell her that they were heading back to New York. But it never happened.
"Right, a-and I know Polly...she was nice and I knew my brother loved her just by the way he spoke of her and suddenly when Jason dies, Polly is at some point put into a home for troubled girls. It's just suspicious..." Cheryl sighed, she could sense Veronica didn't want to put an opinion in so she wrapped it up and turned her focus to Veronica. "What brings you here other than your daddy issues...there had to be a reason you came here rather than some other place?"
Veronica shrugged, taking in a breath before she explained. "My mum grew up here, went to that very high school. She'd always kept an apartment down here and since they took all we had from us that was in my fathers name - which was basically everything - we came here. The apartment is in my mums name seem as she brought the place years ago before I was born."
