Veronica knew Betty disapproved of her friendship with Cheryl, she'd warned her to stay away from the redhead, to keep her distance and not get pulled into the trap because Cheryl would turn on her. But Veronica just didn't see the side of Cheryl that Betty did, besides, she liked Cheryl and as much as she liked Betty, she had a soft spot for the redhead so staying away from her wasn't going to happen. In fact she wished she could spend more time with Cheryl, she enjoyed her company and she loved the fact that Cheryl always wore red, just like Veronica mainly stuck to black and purple, they both wore dresses and they slayed in them. If there was a category in the year book for best dressed, they'd both definitely win. Speaking of the devil, Veronica was up and out of her seat in a second when her eyes landed on the familiar redhead that had just walked into Pop's. She heard Betty and the others wonder why she'd gotten up so fast with no explanation, but she didn't bother going back to tell them. Veronica waved a hand in the air.
"Cheryl, hey!" Her voice was more high pitched than usual, she forced herself to clear her throat when she saw the girl stop at the call of her name, her frown turning to a grin and a raised eyebrow when she spotted Veronica heading her way.
"Veronica Lodge, are you stalking me?" Veronica knew Cheryl was only playing but a blush ran along her cheeks anyway making her duck her head, trying her best to hide it from Cheryl.
"I didn't know you came in here." Veronica finally said as she lifted her head, feeling her blush finally fade away. Veronica glanced Cheryl up and down, she was wearing something different from earlier, a slick, half lace skin tight dress that made Veronica's mouth go dry, trying to slow down her speeding heart as she reluctantly looked Cheryl in the eyes. Veronica was sure she never fell head over heels for someone this quick, it never happened, not even with her ex-girlfriend back in New York. Cheryl let out a sweet laugh, one that put a smile on Veronica's face.
"I've been coming here since I can remember, just not everyday...I'm surprised you come here, a classy New York girl in a tiny restaurant that sells cheese burgers and much too salty chips. I thought you'd find some fancy restaurant somewhere." Cheryl commented, heading over to the counter, ordering a strawberry milkshake to go, then immediately returning her attention to the brunette standing patiently beside her.
"Well...the whole town loves Pop's apparently, including my mum. I just came here with Betty and the others, I think this is the regular hang out place." Veronica pondered, realising she'd been in here more times in the first few days of being in Riverdale than she had been in the school there. "I'd ask you to join us...but I'm not sure the others would be too happy with me for inviting you over."
Cheryl's smile was small as she glanced over Veronica's shoulder spotting Betty and Archie spying on the pair but quickly diving back into their seats when Cheryl spotted them, she let her gaze fall back on Veronica who'd been studying her face for some unknown reason that made Cheryl feel blood rush to her face the moment she saw the dark brown eyes fall to her lips, making her gulp.
"I-it's fine, I um have to get back to nana Rose anyway...I can't leave her alone too long and my parents have gone away for the week again. Maybe if your lucky I'll invite you to my sleepover." Cheryl smirked playfully, nodding a quick thanks to the lady who passed over her milkshake, Veronica laughed shortly before throwing back a witty response.
"And maybe I'll say yes to that."
Cheryl smiled at her in comfortable silence for a moment, she wondered how this girl managed to worm her way into her heart already, even Veronica's dorky smile and lovable laugh made her swoon. She'd met a lot or girls and guys in the past couple of years but none had the effect on her that Veronica had. Cheryl finally broke the eye contact, snapping out of the dreamy staring slight longing in her eyes and looked at the clock, eyes widening slightly. Cheryl took a quick swig of the milkshake that had been resting between her hands, keeping her warm body cool.
"Listen Ronnie, I'm a little later heading back than I expected to be so I'll talk to you tomorrow?" Cheryl asked, hoping the girl would say yes. She knew if she did she'd be thinking about it for the rest of the day praying for tomorrow to come fast, for once in her life, she had something she looked forward to.
"Oh, sorry. Of course, I-I'll speak to you tomorrow." With that Cheryl gave her a nod goodbye then vanished out of the door and into the darkening evening outside. Veronica turned back around on her heel, thinking about the way Cheryl had called her Ronnie, she'd given her a nickname already, granted though, everyone called her Ronnie, but it meant something more to her that Cheryl had called her it, it sounded so much nicer the way that the ginger had said it, rolling off her tongue like she was meant to call her it. Veronica hadn't noticed she'd been smiling brightly to herself until Archie snapped her out of her daze.
"What did the wicked witch of Riverdale say to put that doey smile on your face?" Archie remarked, Veronica's smile fell almost instantly at the cruel nickname and was replaced by a frown, eyes darkening as she looked over at the boy.
"Don't call her that." Veronica said defensively, ignoring the roll of eyes from both Archie and Betty and carrying on, "And that is none of your business."
"I still don't understand why your even friends with her, V. She's horrible."
"Her brother has just been murdered give her a break, plus you might not like her but I do, she's nice and she has a soft side of her - which I'm going to gather you don't get to see seem as you hate her so much." Veronica sighed, getting fed up with their constant disapproval of her friendship, she knew they were just trying to protect her but she didn't need it, at least not from Cheryl.
