Chapter 27: Reyna

“OH MY GODS, MY SWORD’S GONE!” Reyna screamed as the serpent simply yanked her sword from her hands in its mouth. Though she was upset that her sword was gone, she was glad she was okay.

“Gods of Olympus,” Coach Hedge barked. “This serpent isn’t playing with us. This means war!”

Reyna scrambled to move as the serpent hacked up poison. As she was running, she pressed her gold bracelet. In just moments, the bracelet sprung into her spear. She turned around, gripping her spear tightly in her hands.

The serpent flicked its tongue, poison dripping from its fangs. Its bright red eyes stared Reyna down, reminding her of the wolf stare Lupa had taught her at the Wolf House. Right now, Reyna would prefer to face Lupa’s glare compared to this serpent’s horrifying eyes.

“Reyna, I need to tell you something, just don’t freak out,” Hedge called from a few yards away. He seemed uneasy, holding his baseball bat out in an awkward position.

“Spit it out,” Reyna called back, running around the serpent, trying to identify any weak spots in his scaly skin.

“This is a really bad time, especially since we’ve been surrounded by water, and I’ve been on a warship on water…”

“Hedge, just say it!” Reyna nearly had to dive onto the ground to avoid the serpent’s poison being spit at her.

“I can barely swim, and I’m afraid of swimming in deep water.”

            “What?

The serpent’s tongue coiled around Reyna’s ankle. She could hear the sizzling of its poison melt part of her shoe, though none of the poison came in contact to her skin. Before she could stab her spear into its tongue, the tongue tensed before lifting her up into the air, throwing her straight up.

Heights didn’t necessarily scare Reyna. When she used to ride her pegasus, she loved to fly. The few times when she clung onto Jason when he had to move her from one battle site to the other. But when she was being tossed up into the air by a serpent, right beside the ocean, she was terrified of heights.

Instead of falling straight to the ocean water or slamming into the ground, Reyna hit the serpent’s massive head. As she began to roll down its back, she gripped her spear tightly and stabbed the blade into the serpent’s spine, the spear cutting a long, jagged line into the monster’s back as she slid down his body. She could hear the serpent roaring and his poison bubbling from his jaws.

“Good job, not too bad for a Roman!” Hedge cried as Reyna safely jumped to the ground, ducking and running back to stand beside the faun (satyr, ugh).

Reyna couldn’t help but to roll her eyes. “That was nothing, you old goat. You better prove yourself as a mighty hero since you’re a Greek.”

“What’re you doing, kid?” Hedge barked out once Reyna positioned her feet in front of him.

“You’re scared of the water,” Reyna responded coolly. “I’m standing between you and the water. It’s common sense.”

“Well, you’re smart, I’ll give you that,” Hedge grumbled. “I’m also pretty scared of the serpent, especially since you got thrown up into the air.”

            “Greeks,” Reyna muttered.

The serpent finally stopped thrashing around. Its blood red eyes focused on Reyna. She gave him the wolf stare back.

“I think he hates you,” Hedge said.

“Thank you, Captain Obvious,” Reyna snapped. “You can stop with the offhand comments. I’m kind of protecting you, and I’m a Roman!”

The serpent was completely still. He wasn’t moving, his eyes still on Reyna. Reyna didn’t move as well, her knuckles turning white from gripping her spear so tight.

            It came out of nowhere.

The serpent struck, and poison flew from its mouth. Reyna had no time to run as the poison splashed against her, hitting her breastplate. The liquid hit her exposed neck and arms, which had flown up to protect her face. At once her skin had the sensation that she was being lit on fire. She collapsed, her breath leaving her lungs, and her spear falling from her fist.

She was aware that Coach was screaming, “Reyna!” She could hear the anger and fear in his voice.

Out of Reyna’s peripheral vision, she could see Hedge run over and grab her spear. He ran over, screaming a battle cry. Though his body looked very round, he jumped into the air like a gymnast. Somehow he dug the spear into the serpent’s chest. Ichor seemed to come from everywhere as the serpent gave one final screech, falling out of sight.

Reyna’s breathing was labored, and her whole body hurt. The poison was still on her skin, stinging.

“Oh my gods, Reyna,” Hedge breathed out as he bent over Reyna. “This looks bad, good gods. Nico has the ambrosia in his pocket.”

“Hedge,” Reyna rasped out. He silenced at once. “You fight well for a Greek.”

There was a moan from several feet away, and Reyna heard Nico ask, “Reyna?”

“Grab the ambrosia, kid,” Hedge said grimly. “We had a monster attack, and Reyna’s down.”

            Reyna’s down.
