Chapter 43: Hazel
THIS WAS THE BATTLE HAZEL KNEW the seven couldn’t win. It was one thing to fight giants or a god, but this was Tartarus, one of the strongest… whatever he was… alive.
Though Tartarus did try to grab the demigods, they were too fast. Percy seemed to be lightning fast, dropping to the ground when necessary then standing up to stab Tartarus. Unlike the giants, he didn’t even seem affected. There was no sign that he was even getting hurt.
Nothing seemed to touch him. It was as if he was a human and the seven were just harmless bugs, swarming him, doing nothing but bugging him. It was extremely frustrating. After seeing Jason, Hazel wanted to see blood. She wanted to get revenge. This was unlike her to be so upset and angry. For a moment, she wanted to jump on Tartarus and rip his whirlpool head off.
Annabeth surged forward. She had never looked scarier. Before she could even get close to Tartarus, she was slammed backwards as if struck by an invisible force. On her way down, she hit Piper and the two were thrown onto the ground.
Tartarus began to stalk forward, going towards the two fallen girls. Hazel, in a panic, ran in front of them to shield them. She had never felt so small. She lifted her spatha with one hand and summoned a few diamonds in her other, hovering over palm.
“Come closer,” she challenged. Her voice didn’t sound like it belonged to her. It sounded much braver and bigger than her normal voice. “I dare you.”
What a nice act, Tartarus boomed. Why is a small girl like you trying to defend me, God of the Pit? I’ve faced much bigger enemies than you and have won effortlessly. I don’t really think you want to face me.
Tartarus continued to stalk forward. Hazel would hear Annabeth and Piper scrambling to their feet behind her, but it wouldn’t have made a difference anyways. They were among the smallest in the seven and were going to get killed.
“Nice try!” A flash ran in front of Hazel. Before she could react, a blast of fire struck Tartarus in the face.
Hazel blinked. “Leo?”
“Run!” Leo urged the three girls forward. He pushed them along to the other side of the cavern. Percy stepped in front of Annabeth and Frank stepped in front of Hazel.
No, it was a nice try on your part! The flames had been sucked into the darkness of Tartarus’s face. He turned around. If he had actually had a face, it probably would have been extremely angry. Your time is up, demigods. Let’s wait for Gaea to arrive to sacrifice two of you.
“Now would be a good time for a god to show up,” Frank said. His eyes were wide in terror.
“I wish,” Percy muttered.
Suddenly Annabeth gasped. “Percy! You’re… you’re… green!”
“What?” Percy looked down at himself and his eyes widened. “What the-”
Annabeth was right. There was a green glow surrounding Percy’s body, flickering and pulsing as if alive. His aura, which was always strong, seemed much more powerful. He suddenly seemed much more godlike than before.
