Chapter 6: Leo

THE MOOD ON THE ARGO II TURNED horribly bitter when Piper and Percy returned.

When the two had vanished, naturally everyone was thrown into hysterics. Not only were they taken by a powerful Titaness, but Percy was knocked out, and Piper wasn’t exactly a mermaid. They had vanished into the water, which was definitely not a good thing.

Annabeth was instantly negative. Usually the daughter of Athena wasn’t so dark, but she had been like this ever since she had come out of Tartarus. She went for the logical answer, which was that Percy was either being tortured or still unconscious, and Piper had drowned. At that, Jason nearly passed out, and Leo had to snap his best friend out of it.

It had taken at least an hour before the alarm bells started to blare. Leo, being the brave warrior he was, had marched heroically onto deck, threatening the intruders with his fiery fist. He had been beyond stunned to find Piper and Percy lying on the deck, shaking and coughing for air.

Now Leo paced the deck, right next to Festus. Percy had been rushed to the sickbay only about ten minutes ago, Annabeth thinking her boyfriend may be paralyzed. That threw the seven into a panic. Percy was their leader, the glue to hold them all together. Despite the fights and the differences, Percy accepted everyone. He was so easygoing and friendly. Without him, the quest would crumble and fail.

Nobody could face the fact that Percy Jackson, savior of Olympus, natural hero, could be paralyzed.

Leo would have been screaming and throwing things around on deck, but he wasn’t alone. Annabeth, Jason, and Frank, were below deck, tending to Percy. Piper and Hazel were still on deck.

While Percy was unable to move and truly respond, Piper was able to walk. She looked terrified and cold. Her face was pale and clammy. Her eyes darted around nervously, like she was anticipating an attack. Though she looked better than she had originally since she had eaten some ambrosia, she still looked horrible.

Looking at her brought a weird sickness to Leo’s gut. He was extremely guilty for pushing her away. His anger was no excuse for pushing his best friend. He had knocked her over. He couldn’t stop thinking about her horrified expression as she fell backwards.

Leo was just a huge mistake, someone who was unnecessarily annoying and horrible. He was just a distraction to the others. No wonder he was the seventh wheel. No wonder Calypso hadn’t shown any interest when he first arrived…

Calypso… Thinking of her name hurt Leo’s chest, like someone had shot an arrow through his heart. Even though most of the time they had been fighting, he still couldn’t get her out of his mind.

If she didn’t like him, she wouldn’t have kissed him.
