Chapter 31: Jason

JASON JUST WISHED THERE WAS A tracking device to locate his girlfriend at a time like this.

It must have been twenty-four hours since Jason and Percy arrived back onto the Argo II. Since then, nobody had returned from fighting. Their fights could be really long, or worse. The two of them didn’t want to think like that.

            Where could everyone be?

It wasn’t that Jason wasn’t worried for everyone, because he was. The one person who was consuming his thoughts was Piper. He needed to feel her arms around him, holding him close to reassure him. He needed to hear her comforting voice and to see her hopeful smile. It didn’t even need to be Piper herself right now. He just needed a sign to tell him that she was okay.

Percy was the same way about Annabeth. He was often spotted kneeling on the ground, his eyes shut, and muttering prayers to the gods to keep his friends (especially Annabeth) safe.

Together, the two of them were like walking zombies- expressionless and going on their day without emotion.

That night at dinner, the table was silent. Jason sat across from Percy. He couldn’t swallow his food, which tasted like cardboard in his mouth. It didn’t taste like lasagna at all. His stomach felt like it was twisted up, so he just couldn’t eat.

Percy only had a glass of blue Coke in front of him. He hadn’t bothered to get anything to eat. He barely sipped his drink, glancing at the screens which showed Camp Half-Blood. He kept shaking his head. Jason was sitting somewhere where he couldn’t see the screens, so he didn’t know what was going on.

“We need to go find them.” Percy’s voice was quiet, yet strong. He looked at Jason with so much emotion in his eyes that it hurt to look. “We can’t keep playing the waiting game, Jason. I’m sick of waiting for people who aren’t about to show up. We don’t know if they’re dead, or alive, or hurt…”

“I want to go look, too,” Jason admitted. “We can’t leave the ship unattended for a long time, Percy. This is Athens. This is Gaea’s home turf. She probably has the power to destroy this ship if she wants.”

            “She hasn’t done it yet.”

“What if they come back and we’re not here?” Jason cut in. “Percy, you know how much I want to go look for them. You know that. It’s just not wise.”

“I haven’t had one dream about them.” Percy’s face looked hopeless. “All I’m seeing is flickers of the Athena Parthenos and Camp Half-Blood.”

Jason fell silent. He couldn’t confide his dreams to Percy. Last night, he saw a giant sea serpent spitting poison at Reyna. The dream cut off right when Reyna collapsed. He couldn’t imagine her being sentenced to death by poison, but he didn’t know if she survived it. It seemed extremely painful, plus a lot of poison.

“Have you had any dreams about any of the others?” Percy asked anxiously. “Have you seen Annabeth, Piper, or Frank…?”

“I haven’t seen anyone, Percy.” Jason managed to swallow another bite of his lasagna. “I would have told you if I did.”

“I just wish someone could give us a sign.” Percy sighed and sloshed around his blue Coke in the glass.

            WHOOSH!
