Chapter 29: Annabeth

IT TOOK ABOUT FIVE MINUTES FOR Annabeth to get knocked over and unable to get up. Her broken ribs and injured side made it hard to move, so she was slower than usual.

Enceladus was fast and cunning. Annabeth could easily see why he was the bane of Athena. He was the smartest giant she had ever encountered. Everything that he did seemed calculated, as if he was going over a plan of this fight in his head. Every step Annabeth made was obviously anticipated, because the giant seemed to dance around her.

As quick as a lightning strike, Enceladus held out the shaft of his spear. Annabeth tripped on the spear and landed hard on her stomach, knocking the wind out of her. She rolled over onto her back, trying to stand up again. Her hands were sweaty, and her sword fell out of her hands. Her knees shook, and her ankles felt like jelly. Her heart started to pound, and she knew that she couldn’t stand up.

“Is the little daughter of Athena having trouble standing up?” Enceladus asked. His voice was high-pitched in a mocking tone. He began to chuckle. “What a weakling. I thought you were one of the strongest demigods of this century! I suppose I was mistaken. Maybe Hera and your mother made a mistake.”

Annabeth felt weak as she felt the tears roll down her cheeks. She was panicking because she knew she was going to die if she couldn’t get up.

She would never see Percy again. Guilt was welling up inside of her, because he would arrive back on the warship to find her gone. They were supposed to fight Enceladus together.

More tears streaked down Annabeth’s face, and she closed her eyes. There was nothing else to do except pray hopeless prayers.

Okay, I understand I’m a disgrace and I failed you, but please help me, Athena, Annabeth thought. I need your help. I’m your daughter! Please, I need you, Mother.

There was nothing. Athena wasn’t going to help. Annabeth was going to die.

“Any more tears for me, Annabeth?” Enceladus asked, using his mocking tone once more. “I bet you can cry me the Mediterranean Sea!”

Power suddenly surged through Annabeth’s body. Her sword, which was lying about a foot away, captured her attention. She didn’t know why, but her hand reached out and grabbed the sword.

The ivory sword almost seemed to shimmer, giving off silver light. Enceladus seemed oblivious to the fact that Annabeth’s sword was glowing silver.

With a grunt, Annabeth got to her knees. She gripped her sword, holding it like she used to hold her bronze knife. She rolled her shoulder slightly before throwing her sword.

As it flew through the air, the silver light seemed to shine brighter. It cut through the air faster, closing the distance between it and the giant. Enceladus stopped talking, his eyes widening.
