Chapter 38: Annabeth

THE FIRST PERSON TO TAKE A swing was Jason. Hippolytus had stepped forward, the spear shifting in his massive hand. Jason turned his body slightly, Piper still struggling to stand, his body covering hers. He held out his sword, swinging at the giant. As his sword sliced through the open air, a static shock flickered through the air. The bright light struck Hippolytus, causing him to stumble backwards, rocks clattering down from the slopes everywhere.

“Don’t touch us,” Jason warned. His eyes were such a bright blue that it shocked Annabeth. “I would give up if I were you.”

“Fool!” Hippolytus had stumbled back to the very edge of the plateau, slumping against an ancient crumbling throne that Annabeth hadn’t noticed. “If only Krios were here, seeing you disrespecting his first throne.”

Jason’s face paled, but spoke up nonetheless. “I toppled his throne last summer! He did nothing about it as I killed him with my own hands!”

“Is that why he’s back?” Hippolytus taunted.

Annabeth’s eyes flickered behind Hippolytus, nearly gasping at the sight. Percy and Frank had scaled one of the slopes, both precariously standing at the top of it. She watched as Frank turned into a massive hawk, seizing the collar of Percy’s shirt. Frank began to hover, Percy in his clutch.

“Look behind you!” Percy swung his sword at the back of Hippolytus’s neck. The giant staggered once more.

The ichor had run down the giant’s back, but the cut closed as quickly as it opened. “Nice try!” Hippolytus cried. He didn’t even turn around as he slapped the two boys out of the sky. “We’re on very important soil, I heal quickly.”

The two landed hard on the base, clattering against the chains on the ground. Frank shifted back into a human, one of his arms bent at an awkward angle. Percy’s pupils were dilated.

Hazel stomped her foot to the ground. Her hands were raised, her palms pointed towards the sky. Before Annabeth’s eyes, jewels seemed to burst from the ground. There were Greek-style jewelry, huge gems, glittering coins, and even drachmas. The small girl was practically quivering, probably from controlling so many precious jewels. With a yell, the jewels surged forward, aimed towards Hippolytus.

With a POOF! Hippolytus had moved a few feet from his previous spot. With a flick of his hand, the jewels seemed to hit an invisible wall, catapulting back at Hazel at a much faster speed. Before she could move, a few of the biggest jewels struck her in the face. She fell backwards, falling off the plateau and out of sight.

“Hazel!” Annabeth ran to the edge of the plateau, being careful not to fall like the younger girl. About five feet down, she could see Hazel lying on the ground. She was about to jump down there and see if Hazel was breathing when she saw the daughter of Pluto twitching, a low groan escaping her lips. Annabeth breathed a sigh of relief.

There was a scream behind Annabeth. She whirled around, seeing Piper and Leo on the ground. Jason was standing over them, one hand gripping his shoulder. Frank and Percy were still struggling to stand. Hippolytus’s chest was heaving.

“Demigods have gotten more daring and foolish in this new century!” Hippolytus yelled. His breathing was labored. “It makes me more eager to kill you all.”
