Walking into chemistry, I sighed as I realized I was early. So early that only the teacher sat behind her desk shuffling through papers.
I could already tell this would be a long year seeing as Ms. Harris, as written on the chalkboard, had also taken time out of her morning to outline the rules of her classroom.
No talking unless allowed to do so. No phones. Detention will be given to any student out of dress code after the first week. No sleeping.
What a way to start the year Ms. Harris. My lips pursed as I decided to sit near the back where I could at least have the slightest chance of using my phone. As the minutes ticked by, students began to flood in, and yet, not one person sat near me. They had already formed their tightly knit groups.
When the bell rang, a hushed quiet fell over the class, waiting for the teacher to begin her introduction. The click of her heels seemed louder than they should've with the absolute pin drop silence. Just then, the door burst open to reveal the boy from earlier, looking winded and slightly red in the face. "Sorry Gina, my car wouldn't start this morning so I got here late," he breathed, a cocky aura about him.
Lies. I had run into him earlier this morning. As if knowing what I was thinking, he sent me a pointed glare as if to tell me to shut up.
"It's Ms. Harris to you. Take a seat Mr. Avery. Oh, and clear your schedule for this afternoon. You'll have a nice detention waiting for you." She said curtly.
He just shrugged as though he were used to it and looked for an open seat. A smirk decorated his lips as he saw an open one next to me, and lazily made his way to it.
"New girl, huh? You'd be cute if you weren't such a loud mouth." He winked before slipping into his desk.
A fire lit in my heart, resisting the urge to slap his pretty face. "And you'd be decent if you weren't living proof that God had a sense of humor."
A few whistles were heard along with snickers. "Better watch your pretty little mouth sweets."
"Or what?"
Just as he opened his mouth to respond, a loud rap was heard from the front of the class, "If you and Mr. Avery are done bickering, Ms. Turrell, I'd like to start class. I'll see you both after school."
That sealed my lips quick. I couldn't believe I'd gotten detention on the first day.
After class, I raced out, hoping to get as far away from 'Mr. Avery' as possible. Maybe art would calm my burning desire to stick my size 9 shoe up his arrogant ass.

The desk were conjoined in art, meaning I had to literally sit next to someone. Good god I hoped it wasn't Avery. My prayers were answered as a guy sat down next to me wearing a black beanie that covered his styled hair, his cheeks slightly reddened. His shirt matched his beanie, being just as dark, paired with skinny jeans and black combat boots.
He began to sketch as soon as he settled down, and a rose began to come to life before my eyes. "That looks amazing."
"Oh, thanks," He mumbled, "I've been trying to draw one for a while, so I hope this one turns out okay."
"It looks great already. I'm Riley by the way."
"Zach." He smiled slightly, only glancing up before continuing to draw.
I decided to copy Zach's idea and drew a rose myself. It didn't come out as well, but by the end of the class, we were practically friends. We got along well and when comparing schedules, realized we also had next period together.
Too bad we didn't sit next to each other as planned.
So my lazy ass finally decided to revise the first chapter :) I hope you enjoy the edited version just as much as the first ♥️
