[ Misunderstood: Chapter 28 ]
I pulled up to the jewelry store, quickly getting out of the car. A bell chimed as I opened the glass door. One of the workers said a customary, "Hello, how may I help you?" as I entered. "I-I'm looking for a ring."
"Proposing?"
"No! I uh, need a promise ring." he corrected quickly. He had no idea what he was looking for.
Well, he kinda had one, just not a clear image. "Ah, that's one special girl I'm guessing?" she asked.
"Yeah, sort of." Daniel shrugged sheepishly.
"Alright, well, since it's a promise ring, I don't think it needs to be super gaudy or anything. Probably silver with small finishings. How about this one?" she asked, holding up a silver band with a heart engraved on it.
It was nice, but it wasn't necessarily what he was after. He lightly shook his head.
The worker mused for a moment, then disappeared behind the counter. She came up with a tan box and opened it for me to look at.
This one had a thinner band with tiny, multi-colored flowers potruding from it. He didn't think Devilla would like something like that, so he said a quiet, "It's pretty, but are there any others?"
She sighed before thinking once more, "What's her ring size?"
"Five, I think."
"Give me a second hun'." She said, and went through a door to the storage area.
Daniel stood there waiting until the girl emerged from the back, holding a tiny black box. "How about this?"
The band was rounded, and the silver shined brighter on this one. There was a small infinity sign with 'forever' etched on the top right. Something about this ring caught Daniel's attention. "T-this one is beautiful. I think this is the one."
The woman smiled, "It is a very gorgeous ring. Let me check you out then."
He nodded. He felt nervous. Nervous that Devilla would say no. They both walked over to the cash register. "Your total is $120.47."
While Daniel bought a ring, Devilla was sitting at the kitchen table catching up on some missed school work. Her phone went off, making her jump. As she dug through her purse, her hand brushed against a paper wad.
"What the?" she pulled the wad out, her eyes widening.
"How the heck did I get $500?"
There was a knock at the door. "Coming!" She opened the door to Jonah.
"Oh hey Jo." She smiled.
"Did you get the $500?" He asked.
"Uh, yeah, perfect timing actually. How did you know about it?"
"Daniel wanted me to take you shopping." He chuckled.
"Oh.. wait, now?"
"Yeah. Is that okay?"
"Yeah, just let me grab my purse."
She grabbed her purse, stuffing the money back in. "Alright, let's go."
Ten minutes later, they walked into JoAnne's. "Holy fudge, these dresses alone are worth more than me."
"Nah. Anyway, go try on some dresses." Jonah said, shooing her off to the dress racks.
Devilla grabbed a few to try on and then asked a worker for a dressing room. There was shuffling as she slipped on the first dress. It was sunshine yellow with small flowers embroidering from her left shoulder to her right thigh. "It's pretty, but yellow really isn't my thing." She told Jonah. He nodded.
She went through three more dresses, one red, one blue, and one white. Of course, they were all stunning, but she still felt like she hadn't found the right one.
"Hey D, try this one." Jonah called, putting the dress over the stall door. She grabbed it and smiled.
As she slipped it on, she felt the soft silky under layer of the skirt brush her legs. Devilla stepped out once she had it on, "Hey Jo, I think this is the one.
"Woah, Daniel would be we-" Devilla slapped his arm.
"Frantzich, not in the store!"
"Just saying." He held his hands up in surrender.
She went back into the dressing room and changed into her old clothes, hanging her dress back over the door.
Someone grabbed it, and she assumed it was Jonah, but she realized it wasn't when she heard his running footsteps and a shout, "Hey! Give that dress back! It's not yours."
D quickly got out of the dressing room to see the one and only Quinn holding her beautiful lavender dress. "Oh, sorry JoJo. Here you go." she batted her eyelashes.
Devilla held back a laugh as she saw him gag.
"Thanks Jo." Devilla nodded appreciatively, taking the dress, only to see brown smudges on the skirt. "Awh, that little bit-"
"Ah, ah, ah, not in the store."
She huffed, "It's ruined and I have to pay for it now. How am I gonna get a decent dress?"
"Maybe you can fix it?" He suggested.
