your mom and jaeden's mom had been best friends for years, forcing you and jaeden to at least get along. you did in fact get along with him, so much so that you developed a fat crush on him. he only saw you as a best friend though, which at the moment was fine with you.
it was a fall afternoon, mid october, when jaeden and his mom came over for dinner. your mom had just put dinner on the table when jaeden's mom, angela, turned up the radio slightly. clean bandit's "rather be" played as everyone gathered around the spaghetti plates.
"you kids go to y/n's room while we clean up." your mom smiled as you and jaeden raced up the stairs. the radio's music turned up, one of your parent's doing.
"bless the broken road" by rascal flatts (a/n i couldn't think of any other song lol) echoed through your house and into your room.
"dance with me?" jaeden asked as he stood up.
"this isn't a dancing song, stupid." you laughed.
"i know, i mean slow dance." his eyes seemed serious so you stopped laughing.
"i dunno how to do it, but sure." you smiled as you stood up. he took your hands and placed them on his shoulders. you wrapped your arms around his neck loosely as he placed his hands on your lower back.
"watch those hands, jaebug." you winked as he smiled. you let him do most of the swaying, you simply followed along. instead of being in a fancy dress and a tux, you wore velvet shorts and a white tank top an jaeden wore a tee short and basketball shorts. getting into the song, one of your all time favoritess, you closed your eyes and rested your head on jaeden's shoulder.jaeden thought about this song each time he saw you which is why he told his mom to play it, not the radio. he wasn't much of a country music guy, but the lyrics reminded him of his hidden feelings for you.
"i couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you."
"every long lost dream led me to where you are,"
"i think about the years i spent, just passing through. i'd like to have the time i lost and give it back to you. you've been there, you understand, it's all part of a grander plan that is coming true."
after the song played off and the next one came on shuffle, you looked at jaeden and took your hands away. you felt embarrassed. you were slow dancing with your best friend and probably looked like idiots. you both sat at the edge of your bed and looked down at your feet. from the corner of your eye you saw jaeden grab your hand, causing you to look at him.
"y/n, ireallylikeyoulikemorethanfriends." he word vomited, leaving you confused.
"w-what?" you saw the look of dread in his face.
"i was trying to rehearse that in my head, i guess i just said it. i'm sorry, i'll just go home." he stood up as he dropped your hand.
"jaeden, wait!" you pulled him backwards by his wrist which you had caught. he turned around, his cheeks stained a bright red.
"i like you too, like more than friends."
"you do?"
"ask her our already!" a woman's voice said from the stair case. it was jaeden's mom. he kicked the door closed which caused your parents to giggle to each other.
"will you, uh, be my girlfriend?" he said quietly as he scratched the back of his neck nervously.
"it only took your thirteen years to figure out that my answer is yes,"on the way out, your parents gushed about the two of you and how cute you were together.
"i knew they'd end up together!" your mom smiled.
"the same road that led me to you led them to each other." angela awed.
