CHAPTER 4
I pulled up into the parking lot by the pharmacy and got out of the car. I headed to a small door across the street. Above the old door hung a sign that read
COFFEE GROUNDS CAFE
I pushed the door open as the hinges creaking in protest.
"Good morning Molly." Said a cheerful voice. It was Harriet. Harriet was a cheerful plump woman. Her rosy cheeks matched her personality.
"Good morning Harriet." I said brightly. I grabbed my dark green apron from the hanger in the back and clipped my name tag on the top left. I took a deep breath as I breathed in the comforting smell of freshly brewed coffee and hot bread rolls filled my nose. I quickly tied my hair back in a messy bun and headed out to the front counter. At that same moment the door jingled as it opened at exactly 8:30 as it does every day. I smiled as I saw Ryan's face come towards the counter.
"The usual Ryan?"
"You know me too well." He smirked.
"I know you well enough to know that you walk in here at exactly 8:30 every day and order the same thing." I said as I began pouring his black coffee in the to go cup.
"Fine I'll change it this morning, put an extra sugar packet in there"
"Well aren't you a rebel this morning." I joked as I handed him the cup. "It's on me this morning."
"Thanks." He gave me a sweet smile. Ryan was one of those guys that won't stop pestering you till you go on a date with him. Although I will admit that he was handsome with his dark chocolate hair and hazel eyes. His muscular build was very attractive with his tan skin. He was about a head taller then me and was two years older. He was in the medical school a few blocks away.
"So what do you think?"
"Hm? what?" I blinked as I came out of my thoughts. I could feel my cheeks blush from embarrassment. He laughed and said again
"I was asking if you wanted to have dinner one night." I shifted my weight as I thought. I swore I would never get close to any one. I didn't want anyone else to get hurt but on the other hand I was free tonight. There was the fact that I secretly kinda did want to go. Ryan was a good guy once you get to know him. Maybe it was time I got to know him for real. I took a deep breath before saying
"I'd love too." I gave him a weary smile. "Tonight at five sound good?"
"Bit early don't you think?"
"Well my sister is going skating today and I asked her to be home before 6."
"It's ok, five is perfect." He took my hand and kissed it like I was royalty. "I have to go now but I'll see you at 5:00 sharp." He winked at me and turned towards the door.
"He's a keeper, that one" Harriet came up behind me. I jumped in surprise.
"Jeez Harriet don't scare me like that!" I laughed.
"The expresso machine is broken again, you better go fix it." Harriet said as she gave me a warm smile. I sighed thinking of wht tonight would bring as I headed into the back room.
