My little humming bird

Chapter 5

CHAPTER 5

I glanced at the clock on the wall. It read 4:45. Great. I raced from my closet into the bathroom. Letting my hair out of it's ponytail to let my light brown curls brush the tops of my shoulders. It fell to a natural side part. I outlined my sea green eyes with black eyeliner. Almost done.

I had just finished coloring my lips red when the doorbell rang. I took a final and last look in the mirror. I wore a simple fitted black knee length dress with beige heels. The short sleeves covered my tattoo perfectly. I stood there admiring myself in the mirror till the doorbell rang again reminding me I had a guest.

I rushed down the stairs to stand at the front door. With my hand on the handle I steadied my breath and calmly opened the door.

In the frame stood a tall muscular guy... Ryan.

"Well why don't you look lovely." He gave me charming smile.

"You too...uh I mean you look good...handsome... yeah you get the point." Why was I so nervous?

"Thanks." he laughed. "Shall we?" he held out his arm and I took it. Walking out of the house to his old car.

The ride over to the restaurant was silent. We said very little and then there was the quiet humming, coming from Ryan, to his favorite song. I was relived when we got to dinner.

We sat at a booth towards the back of the place. We had agreed on an Italian meal. About five minutes after being seated our waitress came up.

"Hey, my name's Amber and I'll be your waitress tonight. Can I get y'all anything to drink or any starters? I would recommend the cheese sticks, they are to die for." She stood there smiling at us as we made our order. Amber seemed like one of those preppy girls. She wore lots of make up and her hair added a few more inches to her short hight. "And what do you want dear?"

"Oh, um, I'll have the cheese ravioli with a side salad and a sweet tea, thanks." She nodded her head then said

"Sorry have to ask, is this y'all's first date?" Ryan opened his mouth before I could take a breath.

"Yep. I finally talked her into it." He beamed like he was three and just won some candy.

"How sweet. how long have you known each other?"

"Few months now." Gosh he was talking like this was our 100th date and we were going to get married. I just wanted some food. Ryan must have seen the look in my eyes because then he continued "Hey, you said those cheese sticks were good right? Can we add that to the order?"

"Of course dear they will be right out." Amber walked away and I gave Ryan a -thank you- smile. Maybe this night won't be so bad after all.

The cheese sticks came out quickly just like Amber had said. As the night wore on I lost track of time. Ryan made jokes and I laughed. Everything seemed perfect.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was from Lils.

Where are you?

"Oh gosh look at the time!" It was already 6:30. "Lils is going to kill me." I laughed. Ryan waved Amber over for the check. We were out the door in ten minuets.

The drive back was very much less silent. Ryan broke out into air guitar while I sang my heart out.

"How about you stay for coffee." I said as he pulled into my drive way.

"I think that would be great." I unlocked the door. It was dark inside.

Lils is probably already in bed. I guessed as I flicked on the kitchen lights.

"You've got a nice place here." Ryan sat at the kitchen table.

"Thanks." I pressed the start button on the coffee machine. "I'll be right back. I'm going to check on my sister." I headed up the stairs to her room. I opened the door. It was pitch black in the room. I waited for my eyes to adjust to the darkness. I went to stand next to the bed. Something felt wrong. I went and turned the lights on. I felt all blood in my body turn to ice. I stood frozen in the door way. Lillian wasn't there.
