I knew that something would go wrong when Boston called me to pick him up in that area of the city.
I knew it and I still brought her here. How could I be so stupid?
I knew what could happen and I ignored it.
I left her in the car to go and get Boston who I knew was inside one of the dark houses, discussing business with ... let's just say one of our clients. It wasn't a good idea to come here. We both knew that. We were in an area where we shouldn't have business since this was part of another gangs area and it was definitely not a good idea to be here.
And yet there I was, standing in front of Lilian who had a knife against her throat.
Blood was staining her white shirt in different spots and I could see some glass glistening in her dark hair. Panic was written all over her face and in that moment I hated myself. How could I be this stupid to not only bring her here with me but to leave her alone in that car?
I didn't know the man who was threatening to cut her throat. He was tall and broad and had dark hair that was nearly shoved off completely. The tattoo on the back of his hand told me that he was part of the gang that owned this area. We really shouldn't have come here.
„What do you want?", I heard Boston's deep voice from behind me.
The Man gripped Lilian tighter. „Oh nothing, just you out of here", he said through gritted teeth.
Suddenly he pushed Lilian forward and she fell on the floor. I wanted to run towards her and pull her into my arms but I didn't dare. If he was good, he could throw that knife at her before I could even reach her. So I just stood there staring him in the eye. Threat running through them in hope that he would just leave already.
„The next time we see anyone of you around here somebody will be dead after", I knew that he was dead serious but I didn't care this moment. I just wanted him to leave so I could go and get Lilian.
When he finally did, I waited another second before I ran the few steps and fell on my knees next to her.
She was sitting in the dirt, the hands holding onto the earth. I lifted her head so she would look at me. Fear was evident in her eyes. „I'm so sorry", was all I whispered and I pulled her into a tight hug. I felt the little splints of glass on my cheek but they didn't cut my skin so I just ignored them.
„We gotta go", Boston stood next to me and stared into my eyes sternly. I knew he was right. I helped Lilian to stand up. She didn't really comprehend anything. She probably was in shock.
I placed her on the backseat and sat right next to her.
Boston started the car and we drove off. On the way home we all were silent except for my whispered „I'm so sorry"s.
I lifted up Lilian's red splinted shirt to check on her wounds. There were none too big ones so we wouldn't have to go to a hospital.
Two hours later Lilian and I were sitting in my room. She still hadn't said anything since the incident and I was honestly scared about what she would say.
„I want you to stop", there it was. Her first words.
„Stop what?", I asked confused lifting up my gaze to look at her.
She also looked up and I met her blue eyes.
„I want you to stop being part of that gang", her voice was cold. Nearly emotionless.
I was shocked by what she said. I knew this topic would come up eventually but I couldn't believe that she used this moment to bring that up. She was just threatened because of the gang. Who would I be to say no to that question right now? But she knew that as well. She pushed me into a corner and we both were aware of that. It made something click inside of me and I jumped into defense mode without really being able to control it.
„No, I won't", I answered and I could see the surprise in her eyes. Suddenly her expression changed and she knitted her eyebrows.
„But you said you were sorry!", she said reproachfully.
„And I meant it but I am not going to give half of my life up just like this", I told her sternly.
„So you rather let it happen again?", she asked.
„What? No!" Now she started to get ridiculous.
„But it could happen again if you don't leave", she kept going while standing up. We both started to raise our voice and get angry at each other.
„I won't let it happen again", I promised her.
She shook her head. I could still see the shock and fear from earlier in her eyes. I was sure that what she was saying right now wasn't what she really thought about all of this but her next words made me overthink that.
„Either you leave the gang or you and me won't work", were her harsh words.
She stood right in front of me and stared me in the eye waiting for my answer. I didn't give it to her. She knew the answer already so I just stared back at her sternly. Maybe we weren't right for each other when she really wanted this.
She arched one eyebrow in surprise when I didn't answer. She gave me one last nod before she turned around leaving my room.
I wanted to go after her but I just couldn't move. I understood her point of view especially in that moment of shock. But it was her decision if she couldn't be with me while I was part of that gang.
I sat down on my bed and hid my face behind my hands. Did she really just break up with me?
