They're watching.
Always watching. After all, what else do they have to do?
Only watching.
They've watched for so long... Too long. A million lifetimes, centuries, an age.
Watched as worlds were created, watched as they started to crumble. Those who seemed to have been around for millennia.
They called themselves The Watchers.
And they lived up to their name. They watched. They observed. They noticed things that other beings did not.
They noticed that the universe was changing.
Many new worlds came into being all the time, but at what price?
The old worlds, the first worlds, the classics, had begun to fade away. After all everything that begins, has to end.
Even them.
Destruction, carnage, and terror ran rampant.
The worlds that were in the fairytales that they grew up reading, were their own ultimate demise.
War. There were worlds that were at war with themselves. People who could fire a bullet without blinking. People who could snip a lifeline willingly. People who wouldn't lose sleep if they were the cause of the destruction of entire nations.
Some worlds had taken to poisoning themselves. Inhaling smoke to make themselves feel better. Swallowing pills to forget. Eventually reaching a state where they would rather die than give up that tiny sachet of powder.
Others were full of crime. Families would hide in their homes, terrified for their lives, while crime lords would gather all they could get their greedy hands on.
Most however had reached a rather long drawn end. These worlds had reached a level where technology was their life. Those worlds had lost their touch with nature. The people in these worlds never left the very devices that would, someday, suck the life out of them.
The Watchers.
It was a common practice for people to ask advice of them, or make wishes, when there was no one else to go to.
No one but the stars.
Yes... The Stars... The Watchers...
They watch. They observe. They notice things that other beings do not.
They notice the sparks of hope, and the flames of determination.
They notice the dreams and wishes that people will never give up on.
They notice promises that will never be forgotten.
They notice the good things in these worlds, and in others too.
Yes they notice, and they know that not all hope is lost.
They have realize there are parts of the world, that can be terrible, but some parts are beautiful. Those are the parts of the world that are worth fighting for, worth preserving.
Those are the parts of the world that keep hope burning.
But they are only watching.
Watching. After all, what else do they have to do?
They're always watching.
For they are The Stars.
