She was trapped in her mind's embrace.
All her emotions forgotten behind an old door, with a rusty lock.
She never fell into the deep, dark pits of sorrow, so she was forced to forgo the use of her wings.
Her tears were unused, but she had no crinkles beside her eyes.
A few years shy of adulthood, and she was already tired of her existence.
Perhaps it all began when she gave up the use of her voice, gave it up a devil. Gave it up for the gift of safety.
The devil took more than was bargained. Cold hands crept into her subconscious, and left quietly, in the dead of night with all her warmth.
But they were not satisfied. Not until she was simply an empty shell, a shell whose only contents were dreams of the past. After all who would want an empty shell?
No, they left her alone.
And so she was safe.
But there was something else. Something that made her feel something when she was just a face in the crowd, or the only one who didn't look for comfort in others, or the one who was excluded when it came to secrets because she didn't tell her own.
She never spoke of the worries that weighed her down, and she became hollower, and hollower.
After all who would listen to tales of a devil, that came in the dark of night?
Who would listen to stories of emotions locked behind a door as old as she was, to protect her mind from robbery?
Who would listen to a girl who trapped herself in her mind's embrace to avoid ever looking at the one thing that would haunt her dreams?
***
Perhaps if you asked this lonely girl, she would tell stories that seemed impossible.
Stories of riches so vast, that that many a golden coin couldn't match its wealth.
She would have a haunted in her eyes, and say it all in a sorrowful tone.
She would tell you to fly high, and fall low, to experience it all.
She would tell you never to be tempted by the devil.
