I woke up curled up in a blanket with Christopher no where in sight on the end. I blinked a few times before sitting up and looking around the room. It was still dark outside and I could see Christopher throwing on a t-shirt.
"Why are you getting dressed right now? It's so early!" I whined. He laughed.
"I have to get ready for school, Mollie." He told me. "Meaning I have to wake up earlier to catch the bus."
"Am I coming with you to the school?" I asked.
"I figured I'd probably take you with in my sweatshirt pocket if that's okay with you. I don't want my mom finding you or have you get hurt when you're alone." He answered. I sighed. There was no other way for him to insure my safety so I really had no choice.
"I can't come up with another solution so it's fine." I told him. He came over and gently picked me up. He took me to his desk where there was a piece of toast sitting on a plate. On the toast was some smooth peanut butter.
"Here, you should eat something. It'll be awhile until lunch." He told me as he set me down. I sniffed the bread before taking a bite. Sticky peanut butter covered my mouth and stuck to the roof of my mouth. Christopher laughed as I sat trying to free my mouth from the peanut buttery trap.
"Is stucks to my mouth." I said as I kept trying to get the peanut butter off. Christopher laughed even more before handing me a piece of paper towel and then pushed a tall glass of milk towards me. He put a straw in it next.
"Here, think you could drink from this?" He asked. I nodded as he lifted me to straw. The milk was colder than I expected but still refreshing as it washed away the peanut butter. I sighed as I no longer had peanut butter all over me.
"Thank you, but do you think I could just have some fruit?" I said awkwardly. He smirked.
"You sure? You seemed to be having fun with peanut butter." He joked. He laughed as I playfully glared at him. "Alright, alright, I will go get you some fruit. No need to look at me like that." He got up and left. Within minutes he came back with some cut up apple slices. He set the small plate down next to me and I immediately began to eat the juicy fruit.
"Thank you." I said with a mouth full of apple. Christopher scoffed.
"You shouldn't talk with food in your mouth." He said in a faux serious tone. I stuck my tongue out at him.
"Boo-hoo!" I then took another bite of apple and stuffed my cheeks with it. "I'm a chipmunk now." I joked. Christopher laughed.
"A chipmunk with cat ears, sure." He said jokingly. "You should hurry up though. I need to be heading to the bus stop soon."
"What's that?" I swallowed my food. He looked at me weird.
"You don't know what a bus is?" He asked. I shook my head.
"No. I'm not well educated in the human world, okay?" Christopher chuckled.
"A bus is this giant thing that takes us kids to school. Sometimes they take adults to certain areas." He told me.
"I wish us borrowers had that. All we have is our own two feet." I whined. Christopher laughed.
"I have to walk after school so don't feel bad." He said. "You're going to have to chill in my sweatshirt pocket though." He awkwardly rubbed the back of neck. I tilted my ear at him.
"Why?" I asked.
"Well, let's just say people won't react well to a tiny person hanging around. I can find a place at lunch to take you out in." He answered. I sighed.
"Fine, only because I have to." He flattened his hand down for me to step on to. Then he held it by the opening of his hoodie where I climbed into it. I poked my head out. "Try not to kill me, alright?" He rolled his eyes.
"I wouldn't dream of it." He said. "Now get back so you don't fall out, okay?" He gently use his pointer finger to push me back into his pocket. I made a small complaint but moved back. Soon he was walking out. I heard a loud vibrating noise with a loud honk following after. Then the screaming of kids. This must be the bus.
Christopher stuck his hand into his pocket and began to gently stroke my back starting from my head and ending at my lower back. It felt nice, probably because I am part cat. However I could sense the anxiety he had. I grabbed his finger and hugged it gently while rubbing my cheek against it. His hand settled as he rested it in his pocket. I held his finger and felt him relax. I was pretty comfortable with how I was sitting. Soon I had drifted asleep, resting my head on his finger.
I woke up to his movement as he stood up. His first finger still stayed in my lap. I felt him go down stairs and heard him open multiple different doors, one being a locker. He sat down again eventually and I heard an adult voice speak. They spoke about things I didn't know, and when they said Christopher's name he tensed up. I began to hold his finger in my arms and rub my cheek against it gently. He used his free hand to start stroking me like a cat again. Eventually he relaxed and answered the question after a few stutters. He stopped petting me once he was relaxed but I could almost feel his disappointment. I wanted to tell him he was doing well, but I knew I could. I have this urge to comfort him, to help him, and to show him he means more than he thinks. He's alone without me. Even more reason to stay with him. I can't help but wonder what my tribe is up to. However Christopher needs me more than my tribe. I will keep my promise to stay with him. Even if it means my whole tribe hates me.
