Day 9 —What was your favorite childhood toy?
-
My favorite childhood toy? Well, at first I was going to say I loved to play with hearts, but then I realized I have multiple boxes of Barbies in my garage. So, instead of the poetic answer, I give you the truthful one; my favorite childhood toy was Barbies. I'll tell you a secret; if it was still socially acceptable, I would still play with them. I still have the urge to escape my life, to have some thing I can make perfect.
The appeal of Barbies to young girls is that you can make them have the life children think adulthood is going to be, they never have to work, and if they do, they love their job. The women have big houses, nice cars, a beautiful husband, and great kids. The appeal of Barbies is that the life you give them can be controlled; you get to play God. You get to make everything right.
I think that is why I loved them so much. In a book, (Percy Jackson, Sea of Monsters) it describes a fatal flaw; hubris. Hubris means deadly pride or arrogance, in that book a character (Annabeth Chase) says that hubris is thinking you can do something better than the gods. (If you haven't read the PJ series, it is very involved with Greek mythology & I recommend it highly) I think when I was younger, and maybe even now that is one of my great flaws; thinking I could do the world, or my life better than God did. (Again, my beliefs are my beliefs. I believe in one all-powerful God and if you don't like that; stop reading my stuff. You can't change my belief.)
When you're little you don't realize the depth of the world, you don't do taxes, school is easy, your life is very good. Things are handed to you on a silver platter. The you grow up, you see that Barbies aren't just little plastic people, they cause problems, girls think they have to be like them so they wear makeup, dye their hair, stop eating. It isn't just little plastic people anymore.
I know this has gotten a little off-topic, but that'll be okay. I think as all of us age, we try to not make life so hard, we begin to get brainwashed by the world and it's beliefs. We all stop thinking. That is why I think we are plummeting to our doom. We have all took the easy route, we have stopped thinking about what TV shows our kids watch, or what message their toys send them. Fact is; life is changing, our kids and grand kids will grow up in an even more corrupted world. Fact is, next our first and second graders will have iPhones, our first and second graders will be 'twerking' or doing provocative things.
As I've said before, I know this has veered completely off subject; but I encourage you to think about what you do. Life can't be like the barbies anymore, you have to think before you act, because you aren't a little plastic person. This world is corrupted, and you are forced to face it. You can not change your life to be perfect; unlike the barbies, you can't have perfection.
So yes, my favorite childhood toy was barbies, but what's my favorite toy now?
Words. When you string the syllables together, when you play with words; you can make something beautiful. Still you must be careful, because just like those little plastic people, words send a message. Make sure your message is one worth saying.
