The day was August 16th of 1977, that is the day "the King of Rock and Roll' died. My mother was 31, and she cried like a baby. Now, she was 67R and overcome with Alzheimer's. In her mind, it was 1962; the year I was born. Every year, she wrote him a letter. She sent it on February 11th, giving it 3 days to get to him. Little did she know he was gone.
The year was 2014, and I visited her on February 10th; The day she wrote her letter she was in room 2028 in the Grace County Nursing Home. I knocked on the wooden door to the small suite, "Mom, Hi." The old lady staring back at me had white and grey hair, a pale wrinkled face, but a smile that revived a dead heart. She smiled at me and I saw the letter on her table. Sitting near her, I knew she only wanted one thing; to mail the letter. It had to be there on time. "Dear, will you tell Bobby to find me a stamp. Oh, I know we are almost out but I'll run to the store soon. Oh and we need bananas. He sure does love his bananas." She held out the letter to me, on a crisp yellow piece of the good stationary, my mother had wrote in cursive:
"I gave a letter to the postman, he put it his sack. Bright in early next morning, he brought my letter back. She wrote upon it: Return to sender, address unknown. No such number, no such zone. We had a quarrel, a lover's spat, I write I'm sorry but my letter keeps coming back. So then I dropped it in the mailbox And sent it special D. Bright in early next morning it came right back to me. She wrote upon it: Return to sender, address unknown. No such number, no such zone. This time I'm gonna take it myself and put it right in her hand. And if it comes back the very next day then I'll understand the writing on it. Return to sender, address unknown. No such person, no such zone."
It was the lyrics to the 1962 song, Return to Sender by Elvis himself. Under the lyrics was one simple sentance. "E, keep the letter, please don't send it back." Then there was a second sheet attached, with a personal letter to him.
"Will you get that to him?" She looked up at me, "I need it to go today. He has to have it."
"Yes mom, I'll make sure he gets it."
