Snow falls, adrift on a slight breeze, and wisps by a glossy, light blue egg. Two large turquoise blue dragons stand eagerly over it, waiting for the slightest movement fro their unborn hatchling in the shell.
"Its been hours, dear, maybe the child has gone passed our world." The smaller dragon let her wings go limp and drooped her head, "We will have to try again next season."
Grunting, the larger of the two turned toward his mate, "No! This one will hatch, it has to! Even if I have to pry it out!" He looked toward the silent egg, desperation in his eyes while his mate shuffles uncomfortably.
"Dear, we must go inside, the weather is getting worse." The smaller dragon pointed to the darkening sky, and watched as the snowflakes started to fall faster with the wind kicking up, creating a low, howling noise.
Noticing the sudden chance in weather, the male looked to the egg one more time and growled, "Useless egg!" He swings his tail around and swats the defenseless egg and watched in satisfaction as shards of the tough shell fly through the air. He notices a small, scaly, limp body fall out of the remains of the egg, and picks up the lifeless infant. "Why didn't you hatch?" He growls to it as he throws it into a small snowbank. Both walk away without even a glance back at their dead hatchling.
When everything falls silent, and the dragons are long gone, a sudden wind picks up and blows the snow off of the frozen hatchling, and a light appears in its small chest.
The hatchling gasps and its eyes fly open to see a gargantuan dragon, towering over it, smiling.
"I will bring you home now, little one." The strange dragon says as it picks up the confused little hatchling in its talons and walks off into the blizzard.
