Chapter 4

"Thank you," I say as she helps me out of the chair. She just nods and I walk out of the room.

"Dauntless?" I think to myself, "how did I get dauntless? That's the totally opposite of amity, I mean I know it's what I wanted, but that means I'll have to leave my home."

I just shake it off and look for my mother's car. She must have parked somewhere else. Suddenly I see her standing in her yellow and red dress beside several other adults. I run over to her.

"What where your results?" She asks with a smile on her face.

"Dauntless," I reply quietly.

The smile on her face slowly disappears.

"That's-that's great," she says, "come on let's get home.

The ride home seems longer than before because of the deep silence. To try to break the ice I talk to her.

"You said you would love me no matter what faction I got," I say staring out the window.

"Cassy, sweety I do love you, I'm just a little surprised, that's all," she says not making eye contact with me.

"I don't- I don't have to choose dauntless you know, I could stay in amity."

"Yes, but you would never really belong here,"

"I know, but I have to stay with you guys,"

"Do what your heart tells you,"

Those same words the test administrator said 'do what your heart tells you' how can I do that when I don't know where my heart is even going. I could be wanting erudite, but I would still never know.

We pull into our neighbor hood, and I can't stand the thought of telling my little sisters that I'm leaving them forever.
