Chapter 10:

The doorbell rings and I know that it’s Tyler. I put on a half-smile considering the fact that I am pissed off and opened the door. She practically jumps right into my arms. “I guess you’re happy to see me.” I say. “Of course I’m happy! I haven’t seen you in over a month.” She answers. I can’t believe it has been that long since I’ve seen my best friend. I let her in the house and close the door. “Where’s my twinnies?” she asks referring to Shanita and Shanette. “They’re in their room. I’ll show you during the tour.” I smile. “Man, this house is big. Where does Joe work again?” she laughs. I show her the living room, family room, dining room and kitchen. I showed her this awkwardly empty big room below the living room. I never knew it was there until a week after we moved in. “Joe says he’s gonna make it into a theater.” I say. “That would be so awesome!” she yells with excitement. That wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.  We went upstairs and I showed her the bed rooms. “Hey my twinnies!” she says walking into the twins’ rooms hugging them. “Wassup,Ty.” Shanita says. “Hey, Tyler.” Shanette says. They speak so differently from one another, I just don’t get it. “Now it’s time to show you my room.” I say leading her into my sanctuary. “Another staircase? I don’t think I can make it.” She complains. “It’s 5 stairs, Tyler.” I say like I don’t complain myself. She drags herself up the stairs and into my room. “Damn.” That’s all she said. I laugh. She explores my room and bathroom before heading into my closet. “Man I want your room. Your room is bigger than my mom’s.” she laughs. Her mom makes good enough money to get a bigger house but she grew up in that house and doesn’t wanna leave her past. “You’re a mess girl.” I say. She plops down on my bed and stares at my room walls. “It’s weird that I don’t see any pink in here.” She laughs. “That’s what I said.” I say.

We chilled in my room for about an hour. At like 4:45, Anthony called me and told me he was on his way. “So he must be cute.” Tyler says. “Cause I know you ain’t never let no boy get this close that fast.” She says making a point. But she also doesn’t know what I’ve been through this past two weeks. “Yea he’s something.” I smiled. “You think you’ll be dating sometime soon then?” she asks. “Um…we’ll see about that. I’ve had a rough start to my school year.” “It’s only one lousy break up. Devin was a jerk.” She says still unaware of what I mean. But I refuse to tell her for what reason I don’t know yet. The doorbell rings and jumps me out of my thoughts. “That’s him.” I smile. I walk to the twins’ room and Sean’s room to let them know I’m leaving. “Dinner is in the fridge, just warm it up.” I leave their room and walk downstairs. I’m not even gonna bother with Sebastian.

I open the front door and there he was wearing a light blue and white Hollister shirt with some dark jeans and white Adidas. He looks so good. “Hey Anthony, this is my best friend Tyler.” I say introducing the two. “Hi, Tyler, it’s nice to meet you.” They shook hands. Marcus coughed behind him. “And this is my cousin Marcus.” He introduced Tyler to Marcus. “How are you doing, beautiful?” Marcus asks. Tyler laughs and giggles. “I’m fine, thanks.” We walk to Anthony’s car and I’m blown away. “You have a Lexus?” I ask. “Yea, it was a gift for my 17th birthday.” He answers like it’s nothing. This dude has it going. Tyler and I looked at each other. “Your car makes my little Kia look ugly.” Tyler laughs. “You’re funny.” Anthony says. He walks to the passenger seat and opens the door. I stand there confused. Is he opening the door for me? “Well are you gonna get in, silly?” he asks me. “I’ve just never have someone do that for me.” I say. “Well there’s a first for everything right?” he says making a point. Marcus does the same for Tyler and we head to the bowling alley.

“You have a really nice car, Anthony. I wish I even had a car.” I say sadly. “One day you will. Just give it time.” He smiles. “So, Marcus, how old are you?” Tyler asks. “I’m 18 and you?” he answers. “I’m 18 too.” She smiles. She’s just as single as I am so she’s on the prowl right now. About 15 minutes of “get to know you” questions, we arrive at the bowling alley. There were a lot of teenagers hanging outside. “Wow this must be a hot spot.” Tyler says. “Oh yea.” Anthony says. We walk in and a flash of lights just hit us. The room is colorful and bright but very pretty. We walk to the counter to get our lane and shoes. I start pulling out the $8 it costs to bowl. So was Tyler. “We got this one, ladies.” Anthony says pulling out a 50 dollar bill. Once again, Tyler and I look at each other. He just keeps on surprising me. “Thanks.” We both say. We got to our lane and put on our shoes. “Ugh, I hate bowling shoes.” Tyler says. “Girl me too.” I say. Anthony and Marcus laugh. “Y’all are such girls.” Marcus says. “That’s kind of the point.” Tyler laughs. “Dang, Skai, what size shoe do you wear, a 4?” Marcus asks looking at my feet. I laugh. “I wear a size 6, fool.” I playfully slap him on his arm. He looks at Tyler’s and laughs. “Now I KNOW you a size 4.” He laughs. “Size 5, smarty.” She laughs.
