Chapter 12:
We pull up to the park and he parks his car on the side of the road. “You sure you wanna leave your car here?” I ask. “It’s fine. Come on.” He says reaching out his hand to me. I get out of the car and get Sean out of the back. Anthony walks to his trunk and opens it. He pulls out a blanket, a bag and a basket. “What’s all of that?” I ask. “You think I’m gonna let a pretty lady and her little brother sit on the floor, starve and not have anything to have fun with?” he smiles. He’s such a sweet heart. I smile back at him. I hold Sean’s hand with my left hand and Anthony holds my right hand. We look so cute together. We finally find a spot out of the sun and not too far from his car. The tree blocks the sun but not the bugs. “Ewww.” I shriek when something flies over my head. Anthony laughs and pulls out a little lantern that keeps bugs away. He sprays bug spray on the few bugs around the tree and looks up me. “You ok now?” he laughs. “Yes, I’m ok.” We sit down and look out at all the other people throwing footballs and playing with their dogs. “This is really pretty.” I said. “Yes, it is.” He says looking at me and winks. We sit and talk about random things and even read a book that I brought to Sean. “Skai, I’m hungry.” Sean says frowning and rubbing his tummy. I reach for my bag. I brought him some snacks because I knew he’d get hungry. “I brought you guys lunch if you don’t mind.” Anthony says leaning over us to get his basket. I smiled. Even Sean smiled. He opens the basket and pulls out 3 sandwiches. “Tuna for the little guy and Turkey for us.” He says handing us the sandwiches. “And apple juice for the little guy, orange juice for you and grape juice for me.” I can’t believe he remembered that I liked turkey and orange juice. I really can’t believe he remembered what Sean likes. I only told him when I had run out of things to talk about one night on the phone. “Wow you remembered all of this?” I ask. “Yep, I did everything alright?” he asks. “Most definitely.” Sean says as he gulps down his sandwich. He’s such a cutie. “Thank you, Anthony.” “No problem.”
We played with a football until Sean got sleepy. Anthony had brought a pillow and a little blanket just in case he fell asleep. He’s so thoughtful. We watched Sean sleep for a little bit. Anthony pulled me in between his legs and sat up against the tree. “You know you’re beautiful right?” he says. “Yes I do but thank you.” I laugh. “You know you’re smart too right? And you have a really great personality. You know that right?” I turn around and look at him. “Why are saying that?” “Because those are the things that I like about you.” He looks into my eyes very seriously. “Anthony.” I’m so dumbfounded. “I want you to be my girlfriend, Skai. It’d be my honor.” He says. I sit up fully and look at him intently. He isn’t kidding; I can tell by his face. “Will you be my girlfriend?” he asks. “Yea, I will.” I say smiling. It’s a little soon for us but he hasn’t hurt me not once and he’s been here for me since I got here. He pulls me close to him and kisses me as soft as he ever could. He smiled and pulled out a little box from his bag. “This is for you. A beautiful gift for a beautiful girl.” He handed me the dark blue box. I opened the box and found that pretty silver heart necklace from Kay. “It’s so pretty but…” “Take it, Skai. You deserve don’t you think?” he says. He takes the necklace out of the box and puts it around my neck. “It looks even prettier on you.” He kisses the top of my head then I just relaxed in his arms. It seems so perfect but I know once we go back to school on Monday, it’ll be a whole different issue.
We sat at the park for another hour and then decided to leave. He picked Sean and the basket up while I grabbed the bag and blanket. We get to my house and I don’t want to get out of the car. “You ok?” he asks. “When I get out of this car, my life will go back to normal.” I laugh. “It can’t be that bad.” “You got 4 younger siblings, an annoying witch tryna fail you, and haters hating on you? Didn’t think so.” “You’ll be fine as long as you have a great boyfriend.” He leans over and kisses me. I can’t help but smile. I finally get out of the car and get Sean out from the back. “Thanks for a really great day, Anthony.” “Any time.” He kisses my forehead and waits for us to get inside before he pulls off. I take Sean upstairs and take his shoes off and lay him in his bed. As soon as I walk out of his room, my mom is standing dead in my face. “Where have you been, Skai?” she asks. “At the park. I told you that.” “It’s 6 o’clock, why were y’all at the park so long?” “Mom, what’s wrong with you?” “What’s wrong with you? You’re not gonna be taking my son out there when you do God knows what with God knows who!” she yells. At this point, I have to believe she’s drunk. “Excuse me?! If you would take care of your own damn child then you wouldn’t have to feel like I’m doing something wrong. You know me. I don’t do no stupid stuff!” I yell back. “I take care of my children. I took care of you!” “Barely!” “I swear you are the worst child ever.” “And you’re the worst mother!” I say and walk past her. She smells like straight alcohol. “And stop drinking; you make a fool out of yourself every time.” I slam my door and go to my bathroom. My day was going so well and now it’s ruined. What is her problem? She knows how she gets when she drinks. She was supposed to stop years ago after her and dad split up. What is Joe doing to make her drink?
