"Al'Aeen?" Conall comes up to him only a few minutes after Vi left.
"WHAT? Why does everyone gang up on me? I didn't do nothing!"
"True. So? Have you found out what that was?"
"Huh? What do you mean true?"
"You used a double negation so you actually said 'I did something'."
"Well, it's not what I meant!"
"What is the origin of your malcontent?"
"I'm on Calla instead of Earth."
"Hmm. And how did that happen?"
"I got teleported here."
"Teleported?"
"Yes. Teleportation. Star Trek. Dematerialization in one place and re-materialization in another? Oh, who am I kidding? I got magically transported here."
"Aham. How?"
"I touched a damn window."
"One. Go on, why did you touch the window?"
"Because I did... I did what a woman on the other side encouraged me to do."
"How did you know she was there?"
"Well, I saw her disappear into it."
"How come?"
"Because I followed her."
"Two. So why did you follow her?"
"Because she seemed familiar and I was curious. Like something was urging me to follow."
"Three."
"What the hell are you counting?"
"The number of occasions you had to not be in this situation."
"I don't follow."
"You really need to use that big head of yours more. You saw her and you decided to follow. Could have decided not to. That's one. I assume you followed for a while. You could have changed your mind and go home. You didn't. That's two. The woman disappeared inside a window, which by the way, didn't strike you as odd, and did what she beckoned you to, which was to touch the window. You could have ignored her. That's three."
"Well, I see your point, but I don't like it!"
"It's much easier to be a victim of circumstance instead of owning up to your own actions, isn't it?"
"What are you? My life coach?"
"You obviously need it so you can pull your head out of your ass. So if the position is free - sure. Especially now since you are mated to my niece."
"So that's where Vi got that expression from. Wait, Jena is your..."
"Niece. And you just said Vi is like your sister. So when do we do this?"
"Ahm... do what?"
"Beat each other up in a not so friendly sparring match, since we are each mated to the other's female family member."
"That's barbaric!"
"You just said the same thing to Vi not ten minutes ago."
"You were eavesdropping?"
"No. She shared the conversation through our mate link. And you know a good ass-beating does wonders to the strength of relationships between warmates."
"She shared that too?"
"The warmates part? She is my mate. Course she did. Really cool move there, slick!"
"You sound like K."
"Who?"
"too long to explain. Sooo can't we play some football or something instead? Sounds less dangerous."
"Don't worry, son. I won't kill you. And what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger!"
"I guess some sayings are truly universal. So you wanna do this now? Can't we just say you won again?"
"Now where is the fun in that?"
"There is no gain in fighting a loosing battle."
"While that may be usually true, with some well-documented exceptions, this is not a battle. It is only a simple sparring session between warmates. Come to think of it, we are practically related. This simply isn't a situation you can talk your way out of."
"Might as well do this then. No fatal blows and anything else goes?"
"Sure."
Not waiting for another sign from the older wolf, Al'Aeen shifts into his bear form and taking advantage of Conall's slight shock at his animal shape and size swipes a heavy claw at the wolf's chest.
