Chapter 7: Authority Positions

"What?" I asked, in shock of what Mrs. Weasley had just told me.

"Your Hogwarts letter has come," she repeated, biting her lip nervously.

I groaned. This was exactly what Harry had told me not to do- do not go to Hogwarts.

But then again, when have I ever been one to play by the rules?

Mrs. Weasley handed the letter over to me, and I slowly grabbed it. It was heavier than it had been in past years, and I cringed- what if this was the year I got to be Quidditch captain? Would there even be Quidditch?

The other occupants of the room were watching me carefully- almost as if I was a ticking bomb about to explode.

My fingers managed to break open the wax seal.

The first piece of parchment that I pulled out of the envelope was written in Professor Snape's familiar handwriting, neat yet fancy all at the same time.

I opened my mouth, and read it aloud.

"Dear Miss Potter,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected to serve as Head Girl for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Your school record shows that you have exhibited quick-thinking in stressful situations, the ability to lead others, and the grades that are needed to be a leader.

We are certain that you will continue to be a model for your peers and will take your new responsibilities seriously. Enclosed please find your Head Girl Badge, which should be worn on your school robes at all times.

Sincerely,
Severus Snape
Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."

I dug around in the envelope and discovered a Head Girl badge. It was a Gryffindor red, with golden lining on the outside. Across the pin was a thick golden stripe, with 'Head Girl' engraved in it. It was warm in my hand, and I wondered who the Head Boy was.

I really hoped that it was Neville- he deserved it more than anyone else in my year.

"Snape's headmaster," I breathed.

"How did he get that position?" George asked, curious, as he wrapped his arms around me.

"Well the fact that he killed Dumbledore might have something to do with it," I scoffed, my sass coming out.

"I don't know if I want you to go to Hogwarts this year, Madison," the voice of Remus Lupin told me.

I disconnected George's arms from around me and turned to face the man who had just entered the room.

"I have to. I was appointed Head Girl-"

"Which could have been a ploy against you," Lupin wisely said.

I rolled my green eyes in response. Once again, this man- even though he was my godfather- was doing something that made me doubt myself. Dude, I know that you care for me and you're looking out for my safety because I'm one of the only reminders of Lily and James that you have left, but come on. I'm seventeen- which is an adult in the wizard world. I can make my own choices. I'm not invalid.

"I don't think it's a ploy," I evenly stated as he looked at me in disbelief.

"How can it not be? Snape is Vol-"

"Don't finish that sentence! I've figured it out- saying his name is a taboo- it traces him to you! You have to say You-Know-Who!"

"Alright!" Lupin replied in annoyance, "Snape is You-Know-Who's right-hand man. It's obviously something that he chose so he can keep an eye on you!"

I huffed and recalled what I began to think towards the end of the last school year after Dumbledore had been killed by Snape.

"I may not be you, Remus," I began with a sniff of what was probably arrogance in my voice, "but I for one trust Snape."

He looked at me incredulously. "He killed Dumbledore, Madison!"

"You said it yourself last year! That if Dumbledore trusts Snape, you trust him! I trust Snape!"

"That's barbaric!" Remus retorted.

"Did I ever tell you that in our first year, he saved both Harry and I? Our brooms were being jinxed by Quirell- and he said counter curses and was able to save Harry and I from falling to our death! George can verify that our brooms were cursed!"

"She's right," George muttered to me.

"Just because he saved you once-"

"The night he killed Dumbledore, he put a finger to his mouth and shushed Harry and I- we had to be quiet. If we weren't... we surely would have been killed that night."

Remus shrugged his shoulders in defeat almost.

"Look, I'm just worried. Your brother is at Grimmuald Place-

"Why the hell is he at that old hell hole?" I interrupted him.

Remus shrugged, "He's on some sort of mission or whatever. But if you want to go to Hogwarts, do it."

"I will. I will be the Head Girl- because somebody needs to lead this school into battle. Somebody needs to lead them into this goddamn fight, and if anybody else had to, they'd fail. I can do it, and I will," I forcefully said.

"Are you sure you want to take this position?" George asked me later that night as we cuddled up in his bed together, the covers on top of us warm and fuzzy despite being around a thousand years old.

I turned my body so I could look at him. Glancing up into his hazel eyes, I stated, "Yes."

"What if you get hurt?" George asked me concerned as he stroked my cheek with his thumb, "I wouldn't be able to live if you were taken from me."

I gave him a small smirk. "You-Know-Who won't hurt me unless Harry and I are together. And considering that I don't know where my brother is at the moment, because apparently he just departed from Grimmuald Place, according to your father- he saw them at the Ministry or whatever- I think I'll be okay."

"Okay," he softly replied, wrapping his arm around my waist and bringing me closer to him.

I smiled warmly at his actions and fell asleep, only to have the smile soon slip off of my face as I began to toss and turn in bed.
