Chapter 8: And the Head Boy is...

The day had finally arrived. I would be going back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry without Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Not once had I been to Hogwarts without them- well, without them all at one time.

Truthfully, I was frightened. I didn't know what I was going to be expecting for the school year, and part of me was glad that I didn't, but the other part of me- the more rational and intelligent portion of me- waned to know.

We managed to get to the train station by flying all the way over several counties on broomsticks, using charms to make the belongings that were brought with us smaller and lighter, that way we weren't held down.

Platform 9 3/4 had a gloomy feel to it; the happiness of students who were eager to return to Hogwarts seemed to have disappeared. It was understandable, though.

The platform seemed to be considerably less crowded than it had been in previous years, which worried me. What if people I had gone to school with had been killed? I didn't see a whole lot of first years either- it was easy to spot them, of course. The first years were always all excited and jumping up and down in glee and anticipation. It is hypocritical of me to say this, as I was the same exact way when I was a first year, if not more excited.

"I'll be safe," I looked at George as I bid him goodbye.

"Please do. I wouldn't be able to bare it if I lost you," George softly told me in reply, shifting a strand of my red locks behind my ear.

"I love you," I murmured to him as I placed a soft kiss on his smooth lips.

"I love you too," he replied as we separated from the kiss.

"Tell your family I love them too. I can't say goodbye to them- I don't want to cry," I told him.

I gave him one last hug before hopping onto the Hogwarts express with Ginny by my side.

"I have to go to the prefects carriage, and brief everybody. I just hope the Head Boy is somebody that I can at least stand..." I trailed off, going towards the front side of the train and leaving Ginny to herself.

I swiftly made my way to the front of the train, my skirt riding up my butt as I did so. With all the events going on, I had forgotten to ask Mrs. Weasley if she could possibly make it a bit more longer. My tie was loose around my neck- I would straighten it up later. I was sort of in a rush. My black Gryffindor robe flew behind me as I ran down the hallway and into the cabin full of prefects.

"I am so sorry that I'm late," I stated, out of breath.

"Took you long enough," the familiar voice of Anthony Goldstein reached my ears.

"I'm sorry that I was in a rush to get to this cabin, Anthony. I was held up by something," I lied smoothly.

For some reason, he believed me.

"Now, I'm Anthony Goldstein of Ravenclaw. I'll be the Head Boy for this year," Anthony introduced himself.

"And I'm Madison Potter of Gryffindor, but I assume you already knew that. I'm the Head Girl for this year," I introduced myself.

"How is this year going to go? You-Know-Who is out there... and Professor Snape is Headmaster," a girl from Hufflepuff stated with fear.

"I have a solution to that, uh, what's your name? I've forgotten it," I stated sincerely.

"Kendall Barnes. Fifth year Hufflepuff," she strongly stated, confident.

Kendall had hair that was short and black and curly; her skin was chocolate and her eyes were a deep brown full of fear but kindness and wonder.

"Okay, Kendall, like I said, I have an idea for that... which I will tweak accordingly due to the fact that I must see what the school is like now that it is under a new headmaster," I told her and the rest of the occupants in the cabin.

I did have a plan- but I did remember that Slytherins were also in the cabin. I don't think of myself to be a prejudiced person, but during times such as these... I couldn't trust anybody- especially the Slytherins.

"So you don't have an idea?" Anthony Goldstein arched a blonde eyebrow at me.

I turned my head towards him and scowled, "As a matter of fact, I do. But this really isn't the place to say it. Surely a Ravenclaw such as yourself would understand my reasoning?"

"Yes..." he realized as his eyes pointed towards the Slytherins.

"Good. Now, this year... It will be different. Dumbledore isn't here-"

I was cut off by Logan Borne, who was a sixth year Ravenclaw. "It'll be harder, won't it? How will we do patrols?"

I wasn't sure how to answer that- after all, I had never been a prefect. I had no clue what to expect.

Thankfully, Anthony answered, "Just like we always do. We will post a patrol shift sheet in the prefects meeting room as soon as we can."

"Any questions?" I asked the group.

Nobody raised their hand or spoke, so I looked at the Head Boy and nodded.

"Meeting adjourned, or whatever they say " I proclaimed.

The prefects began to file out and as they did so, I stood awkwardly, rocking back and forth on my feet.

After giving the Gryffindor prefects enthusiastic waves, I couldn't help but feel relieved. The meeting hadn't gone as bad as I had feared that it would.

"I'll see you later in the Head Boy and Head Girl dormitory, Madison," Anthony blushed as he walked briskly out of the cabin, his voice going up an octave.

"Yeah, whatever," I rolled my green eyes at him before turning off the light in the room and then locking the door to the cabin behind me.

I finally found Ginny, who was sitting with Neville and Luna.

"Whose the Head Boy?" Ginny asked as soon as I got in.

I plopped down on the seat across from her and next to Neville, shutting the door as I did so.

"Anthony Goldstein," I sighed, annoyed.

"He's had a huge crush on you ever since your third year, you know," Luna told me, her tone airy as usual.

"Really?" I arched a red eyebrow. "Well that's too bad then, because I have no interest in him. I love George, and I will forever. There's no doubt about that."
