Luke's POV

Once I walked into school, I heard bits and pieces of everyone's conversation:

"Oh yeah, did you hear about Calum? Some janitor found him on the floor--"

"Didn't Josh beat Calum up? I thought they were friends--"

"Calum Hood? Why was he in the boys locker room after school?--"

I sighed. I hadn't thought about how gossipy this school was before kicking the most popular kid in this hell hole. I basically just committed social suicide. It didn't seem like people knew Vic, Kellin, Ashton, and I were even there, and I intended to keep it that way.

******(time skip)

I took a deep breath before I walked into the lunch room. The only reason why I hated lunch was because it's where everything suddenly became clear; who were the popular kids, who were the outcasts, the jocks, the nerds, the sluts, every social class.

Where should I sit? Calum's table? I glanced over at where Ashton sat yesterday and frowned. He wasn't there yet. I glanced back at the other table.

I immediately caught Vic's stare, and he looked like he was silently pleading me to sit over there.

The second I sat down I was bombarded with questions.

"Did you hear about Calum?"

"He got beat up apparently--"

"I think he was with Josh--"

"I don't really care. He's kind of an asshole." Alex blurted out. The whole table turned to him, but he stood his ground.

"What? He's a jerk and you all know it." Some people mumbled in agreement while others shook their heads. Vic gave me a look. Everyone went quiet, and it began to feel awkward.

Alex mumbled something along the lines of, 'you guys are pathetic' and left the lunchroom. We all turned to each other. What's his problem? Jack bit his lip.

"I'll go talk to him." Once Jack left, everyone began talking again, as if nothing happened. In the midst of their conversations, Vic picked up his stuff and sat down next to me.

"Josh, Calum, and Michael aren't here today, and no one exactly knows why, and if someone does find out the truth then we're all fucking screwed to hell." I smirked.

"Well hello to you too."

"Dude! This is serious!" Vic smacked my arm, exasperated.

"What is this? Pretty Little Liars? You're being dramatic! Who cares if someone finds out what happened? Who's gonna care that I knocked out Calum?" I was careful and kept my voice down so only Vic could hear me. Truth is, I actually cared a whole fucking lot about all of this, but I didn't want to seem like I did. I don't want Vic to think I'm a coward or something.

He just shook his head. He could see right through my stupid act.

I didn't like where this conversation was going, so I subtly peered over Vic's shoulder. I sighed in relief as I saw Ashton sitting down at his table. Alone, maybe. But, at least he was here today.

"It's okay to be vulnerable, Luk--" he stopped himself. "What are you looking at?" I quickly turned to Vic.

"I--uh, nothing." He raised his eyebrow.

"You're a terrible liar, did you know that?" I scoffed at that as Vic followed my gaze. Once he found out who I as looking at, he smirked. "I should've known you were just making heart eyes at Ashton." He waggled his eyebrows suggestively, and I blushed and swatted at his arm.

"Fuck off! I just wanted to know if he was okay."

"Oh, cut the bullshit! Go talk to him, I know you want too." Vic began making kissy faces at me and I groaned.

"What are you, five?" Vic laughed, patting my arm.

"Mentally, I guess I am." He spoke quieter and said, "No one will notice that you left, they're all distracted." I nodded at him, and got up.

As I sat down at Ashton's table, he looked up at me, cheeks reddening. I winced when I saw his black eye; it was a horrible reminder of what happened. He looked exhausted, which raises my suspicions that he didn't get any sleep last night.

"Hey, um--I just wanted to ask if you're okay." Ashton absentmindedly picked at his sleeves, and kept his eyes on his hands.

"I'm fine." he muttered, biting his lip. That wasn't very convincing, but I didn't want to push him. I decided to quickly change the subject before I blew my chance to talk to Ashton.

"So, where's Kellin?"

"Lunch detention."

"Why's he in lunch detention?"

"He snapped at the teacher for making us do a packet for homework... And he punched a kid in the jaw." I chuckled. I barely knew Kellin, but he seemed cool. Ashton's gaze locked with mine for a spilt second until he looked away, his cheeks a shade of pink.

"Why'd he punch someone?" Ashton looked a bit distressed, and he frowned.

"The guy was saying mean things about me, so Kellin punched him. I told him he didn't have to do that, but he said the guy deserved it and that he was a dick. But now I feel guilty because I'm basically the reason why he got in trouble and I--"

"Hey, it's not your fault. It's not like you told Kellin to punch him." Ashton shook his head.

"But I can't--I can't help but feel guilty." He pulled his sleeves over his hands and looked down sadly. I frowned down at him.

"Hey, don't think like that. I know it's hard not to let your insecurities bring you down, but all I know is that none of it is your fault." I blushed a little bit at what I said, and Ashton's cheeks were on fire.

"I--" Ashton began to say, but was cut off by the bell that signified lunch was over. He looked a little relieved, and he gave me one last look before taking off again.
