What?

I stared at my mum in shock.

Troy?

“Mom,” I whispered. “You’re joking right?”

She held a hand to her forehead and hugged me.

“We’ve got to go.” I hugged her back and followed her to the car.

I still couldn’t process the incident.

How could Troy, the most careful driver, have an accident?

I remember he was the one who had taught me how to drive.

“I can’t do this.” I told him as I stepped on the brakes.

Our car had already got quite a few scratches and dents and it was only the second day of me learning how to drive.

I glanced at Troy, who had held the armrest tightly and was breathing heavily.

“God Angie, you drive like a ten year old. In some ways, I don’t believe you’re my sister at all. I mean, at the rate you’re going, you’re probably going to learn how to drive when you’re 60. Calm down. Let’s try that again. Lift your leg up the brake and change the gear…”

A tear slipped down my cheek.

I prayed nothing would happen to him.

~Two Hours Later~

My mom and I ran to his assigned hospital room, occasionally shoving someone out of the way.

My dad was standing outside the door and I ran to him.

“How’s Troy? Did something happen to him? Is he all right? Is–“ I was interrupted by my dad.

“He wants to see you.” And my dad let me in the room.

As I entered I was encompassed by the fragrance of millions of flower bouquets, sent by friends and family. Get Well Soon cards peeped out from between the flowers and I smiled at my brother who had sit up on his bed. He had a bandage tied to his forehead and some IV’s and injections were seen on his hands. Several machines were beeping softly.

“Hey Angie.” He grinned at him. He looked tired.

“Hello Brother Dear.” I grinned back at him.

I went ahead to hug him but hesitated.

“Hold out your palms.” I ordered him.

He chuckled and held them out, then pulled me into a hug.

I was so glad my brother was fine.

Then I pulled away and crossed my eyebrows at him.

“How did you manage to get into this state?” I looked at him suspiciously.

He grinned sheepishly and scratched the back of his head.

“I.. was drunk.”

I nodded, knowingly.

That said it all.

“Say, Dad told me you left the party because Mike ruined your phone. I don’t understand, he’s such a sweet kid.” He scratched his chin.

“More like Devil’s Spawn.” I grimaced.

“I don’t have a phone anymore!” I moaned.

“What did you do at home alone then?” he asked.

“Oh, I wasn’t alone. There was Jake and-“ The incidents replayed in my head and I smiled.

“Woah, woah, woah! He didn’t- make a move on you- did he?”

“Um,” I started playing with the hem of my shirt.

I expected Troy to go all protective big brother and yell at me for letting a guy alone in the house.

Instead, he started patting my head.

“Yes! Calling Jake to our house was the smartest thing you have ever done! I am proud of you! I’m so glad he did it. Tell him to call me.”

“Hold on a minute, you knew he liked me?” I was surprised.

“Even Mom and Dad know. Just wait till they find out, they’ll be giving out Wedding invitations the next day.”

“Shut up! I don’t understand boys. You tell Mom and Dad, I will personally kick your ass.”

“Aw,” he cooed. “Angie’s all grown up, throwing threats around.” And he scratched my chin. I smacked him on his hand and he grimaced.

“Sorry.” I said.

“Watch it. Injured person in here.”

I rolled my eyes and went out of the room, waving goodbye.

As soon as I left the room, my mom came over to me, concern on her face.

“Is Troy okay?” She asked.

I smiled.

“Perfectly all right.”
