6. Temporary leave

TEMPORARY LEAVE

The tower is completely quiet the next morning. Everyone must still be asleep since we stayed up until late last night. Still, it's very unusual. Usually someone is already up by this time.

My head snaps towards the door as I hear a noise, frowning when I hear soft footsteps on the hallway.

Who could that be? I wonder, quietly making my way to the door, peeking my head out slowly.

When I walk out of my room, I see Bucky carrying a bag.

"Where are you going?" I ask, the soldier tensing as he turns around to face me.

Letting out a defeated sigh, he fixes the bag on his shoulder. "I'm going away for some time doll." He says, proceeding to explain when he looks at me. "We found someone who might be able to help with the brainwashing. It's a long shot but I'm willing to give it a try. I don't know how long it's going to take, but I'm staying until we find a way to undo it."

"I see." I say nodding my head, pressing my lips together as I do so.

"Don't worry doll." He says. "It's a place where hopefully Hydra won't be able to find me for a while."

"Good." I say feeling slightly relieved.

Without saying another word, his lips slightly turn upwards as he sets his bag down, opening his arms, and without hesitating, I give him a hug.

"I'm going to miss you." I say. "Please take care of yourself Bucky."

"I was about to say the same thing." He says with a chuckle. "Don't worry doll, I'll be back before you know it."

"I hope everything goes well."

"Me too." He says chuckling.

"By the way, don't try to leave without saying goodbye okay? It's not nice." I say tightening the hug, swallowing hard as I feel him nod.

"I know, I'm sorry. I'm still not used to it." He says breaking the hug.

"It's alright." I say, but then softly punch his arm.

"What was that for?" He asks rubbing the spot.

"For attempting to leave without saying goodbye." I say crossing my arms, uncrossing them as he picks up his bag again.

"My ride is going to be here soon." He says.

"I'll walk with you." I say, the super soldier nodding as we walk together towards the elevator.

As the elevator doors open, I turn my head and speak again. "Hey Bucky?" I call out.

"Yes?"

"Thank you for everything."

The last thing I see as the doors close is his smile, giving me one last nod before he's gone.

Letting out a small sigh, I jump in my stop when I turn around and see Steve standing nearby, leaning against the wall.

"You almost gave me a heart attack." I say putting a hand over my heart.
