Do you do edits by email or PM? Neither, I prefer to use a program called Google Documents when editing. This program is easy and free to use. It only requires you to make a quick account. It allows us both, meaning the author and I, to make edits at the same time. I feel that my job as an editor is not only to get a piece of writing to its highest potential, but to make the author a better writer.
