28 - Goodbye Elijah
----- ----- -----

"I can't do it, I can't do it," I say as Kayleigh tries to pull me out of bed.

"Ally, you gotta go up and make a stand," she says firmly.

"Yeah, well, I'm not exactly the go-up-and-make-a-stand kind of person. Why don't you do it instead?"

"Oh yeah, and I'll tell Ethan that you're having feelings for him. Good idea, Ally."

"What? No." I say in alarm, jumping out of bed. "Don't you dare."

I head to my bathroom and hesitate for a moment. "But I still can't do it."

"You know I have Ethan's number, right?"

"Okay, I'll do it," I say, slamming the door of my bathroom as I watch Kayleigh grin.

The Bests' house is right in front of me, still and quiet. I look up at one of the windows. Elijah and Ethan are probably inside their rooms, recording videos and stuff.

I hold up my hand and curl into a fist, but I don't knock.

"Knock," Kayleigh says. "Just knock. Why aren't you knocking? You sure you know how to knock?"

I finally knock. When nobody came, I knock louder.

A tall man swings the door open. "Oh hi...Elijah's girlfriend?"

I nod. "Nice to see you, Mr. Best. I'm Ally. Is...Elijah upstairs?"

"Yep, he's up in his room. You might want to be quiet though, in case he is recording."

"Okay, thank you." I tiptoe upstairs, Kayleigh following behind me.

"Wait, Ally," she says, and I turn around.

"You know you have to do this on your own, right?" she asks.

I blink. "Uh, no. I thought you were going to explain it to Elijah with me?"

She shakes her head. "I can't. It would be better if you explain it to him, okay? It would make what you're saying more truthful. So you have to do this on your own." She pats my back a little too hard. "Have a little confidence, alright?"

I wail. "Ugh. Confidence. I'll try, Leigh."

I press my ear against Elijah's door. I couldn't exactly tell if he's recording or not, so I slowly open the door, peeking in.

Elijah quickly glances at me. "Ally?" he says.

"Are you recording?" I whisper.

"Yeah, come in," he says, his face lighting up.

I step inside and close the door. I sit, crossed-leg on his bed.

"Yo, this is my girlfriend, Ally," Elijah says, picking up the camera and aiming it at me. I wave in fake enthusiasm. "Anyway, the trick to this obby is...."

While he recorded, I shift uneasily. I'd have to wait for him to end his recording before explaining the stuff to him.

"Thank you guys so much for watching," he says. "If you want me to play more Roblox challenges like this, give this video a thumbs up, and comment if you'd want me play some other games. I open for suggestions.... Take it easy, fellas." He winks, then turns off the camera.

"So why did you stop by?" Elijah says, sitting next to me.

I bite my lip. Should I just get straight to the point? "I'm breaking up with you."

He pauses.

"Why?" he asks.

"All my life, I've had a huge crush on you," I begin. "And believe me -- it has been my lifelong dream for you to be my...uh, boyfriend." I gulp awkwardly. "Seriously. My best friend and I do this Friday night call thing, and then I give her a sort of weekly daydream about you and me. When I was fourteen, I had this diary, and in at least every page, you'd see your name written on it. Remember when I moved to Newton in high school? I kept hoping you'd be in my school, and when I found out you weren't there, I cried. I always thought about you. But then...." I straighten myself. "I met this guy, right before we started dating, and he was so nice. We actually became so close, we were literally best friends." Were? "But then I started liking him without realizing it until yesterday." I look at Elijah guiltily.

Elijah frowns. "It's Ethan, isn't it?"

I shrug.

"Ally, I know you're talking about Ethan. You like Ethan," he says -- quietly, thank goodness.

"Okay, okay, I guess I do," I say. "Then when you became my boyfriend, I felt like things were off. Like I was supposed to be dating you. It didn't feel right." I take a deep breath. "I'm so, so, so sorry Elijah. It's kind of hard for me too to break up with you, since I know me from the past wouldn't appreciate it. But it's now that matters, and so...."

"No, I get what you mean," Elijah says. He nods. "That's okay. We're both good."

I look up at him hopefully. "What do you mean?"

"I accept your choices," he says, smiling.

I blink at him. "Wow, I didn't expect you to say that. I thought you were going to murder Ethan or throw your computer out the window."

He smirks. "No, it's okay. I understand."

I hug him. "Thank you. Goodbye Elijah. It was nice being your girlfriend for a while."
