Bolt and Penny

Mom's Wishes

    "Mom I'm home!" Penny calls, opening the front door and setting down her backpack. "I'm in the kitchen sweetheart!" Penny's mom calls out. From the direction of the stairs Penny heard the quick patter of paws on carpet and Bolt popped into view. "Hey buddy! How's my Bolty Boo?" Penny greeted laughing as Bolt jumped up and began attacking her face with wet doggy kisses. Scratching her Shepherd between the ears, Penny embraces him in a hug and kicks off her shoes. Sitting on the cushioned sofa, she picks up the TV remote and flicks the flatscreen on.

    "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! Come on down to Big Pete's Wrestle Mania! Dozens of your favorite wres-". Penny scoffs and flicks the channel, cutting off the announcer's words. After scrolling through the channels for some time, she turns off the TV and sets the remote on the table. From around the corner of the couch, Bolt appears and sits down in front of Penny. "Hey buddy," she greets, "Wanna sit with me?" Bolt woofs and jumps up onto the couch, climbing into Penny's lap. Burying his muzzle into the corner space of Penny's left arm, he gets comfortable and settles down for a nap.

    Penny rests her arm on the side of the couch and lays her hand on Bolt's back, gently stroking up along the soft fur on his back, to the spot between his ears. "Penny!" Groaning, the girl responds, "What!?" Hearing footsteps on the hardwood of the kitchen, then the carpet, Penny's mom enters the room. Sitting down adjacent to her daughter, she clears her throat and says, "Honey, there's a favor I need to ask of you." Nodding, Penny hears out her mother. "Well, as you know, my birthday just so happens to be the day you graduate on the last day of school, and instead of some silly card..." Penny's mother smiles proudly. "I want you to graduate with a 4.0!"

    Penny nods, "Sure I think I can-" but stops herself mid-sentence and does a double take. "Wait? What!?" Penny's mom explains, "Well, I just thought it would be better than a card because I get to see you graduate, and you can be accepted into one of the best colleges around!" Penny stops petting Bolt and asks, "What college is that?" Penny's mother claps excitedly and pulls out a booklet, handing it to her. "The University of Los Angeles!?" Penny cried. "Yep!" Penny's mom smiles widely. Bolt looks up at Penny with a worried face. "B-but mom! That's like 3 hours away from home!" Penny shouted.

    10 minutes later- Penny opens the door to her room and does a belly flop onto her bed. Bolt follows suit, and climbs up with her. "Oh Bolt what am I gonna do?" Penny said, gently stroking her dogs warm belly. Bolt whined and nuzzled her neck, cuddling closer to his human. Penny laughed and pulled Bolt into her chest. "I love you too Bolty."
Pulling back the covers, Penny climbed underneath her blanket and wrapped it around her and Bolt. Cuddling up, Penny slid her arms around her warm Shepherd and buried her face in the side of his neck. Sighing contently, Penny softly nuzzled Bolt's downey fur and thought, "Hm, I never knew that Bolt liked to cuddle. He usually sleeps above the covers at the foot of my bed." Closing her eyes, Penny felt the warmth radiating off Bolt and soon, her breathing turned to that of sleeping.
