Penny slept peacefully on the hospital bed. Her mom still sat in the chair, eyes    closed, and chest rising and lowering slightly. Bolt was lying atop Penny, his muzzle buried in the crook of her neck. She had thrown the blanket over the both of them for the night. Penny tightened her grip on Bolt and let out a sigh. The sun shone brightly through the hospital window to warm up the room from the cold. Then came a knock on the door. Bolt's eyes popped open and he let out a soft woof. Penny's mom awoke with a start, another knock on the door. Rubbing her eyes, Penny's mom stood up, "Alright alright, I'm coming. Don't get your panties in a twist." Yawing, the middle aged woman stumbled tiredly to the door and opened it. A smiling nurse greeted her on the other side. "Good morning miss, you must be the mother. My name is Nancy, I'll be your daughters nurse for the day." Penny's mom nodded and said, "So, you wanna come in?" Nancy nodded, "If I could please, I have to do a checkup on Penny." Stepping aside so the nurse could enter the room, Penny's mom shut the door behind her and let out a deep breath.

Nancy picked up the clipboard on the end of the hospital bed and looked over Penny's information. 'Gunshot wound to the side, no major arteries or organs punctured. Patient has responded to well to sedatives. Give small dose of Hydrocodone to patient every six hours for pain relief.' Nodding to herself, Nancy smiled when she saw the white dog curled up on Penny's uninjured side. Leaning down, Nancy gently tapped Penny on the shoulder, "Penny, hey Penny. Wake up sleepy head, I got to do a physical on you to know your ready to go home."

Penny woke up to the feeling of someone tapping her on the shoulder. Opening her eyes, the redhead reached both arms up and stretched, yawning. Standing over her was a nurse. "Mmmm... what time is it?" The nurse looked at the clock hanging on the wall, "About 10:32 dear. You had a rough night last night." Sitting up in the bed, Penny lay a hand on Bolt's back. The dog whined and the nurse couldn't help but smile at the cute scene before her. "I'm alright Bolty, a little out of it but other than that, I'm fine." Bolt woofed and rolled onto his back, looking up at her with those big brown eyes of his. Leaning down, Penny placed a small kiss on his cold wet nose.

10 Minutes Later- "Alright honey, all done." Penny lay back down on the pillows and wrapped an arm around Bolt. Writing a couple things down on her clipboard the nurse smiled and said, "Well, let me get these results to the doctor, and you should be able to leave in about a half hour." Closing her eyes Penny heard the footsteps of the nurse recede to the doorway and then the door shut. With Bolt lying at her side, Penny felt her body grow heavy and soon she was sleeping once again.

Walking out of the hospital, Penny took her time getting to her mom's car. Opening the car door, Penny climbed in and let Bolt jump up into her lap. "So you ready to go home sweetie?"Penny nodded, "Yep, now I can brag to all the girls in my grade I got shot and lived." Penny's mom scoffed, "You do start bragging, and I'll put you right back in this hospital missy." Penny laughed but stopped when she felt pain in her side. "Haha, haha, ow..."

Back At Home- Penny climbed slowly up the steps to her room and opened the door. Everything was just the way she left it the night before. Bolt trot in past her as she set her jacket on top of her dresser. "Now Penny we can finally talk." Walking to her bed, Penny stripped down to her underwear and pulled back the covers. Laying down, Bolt hopped up and snuggled under the covers with her. Embracing her dog, Penny allowed him to snuggle his head into her chest, much to his delight. "You don't have to worry anymore Bolty, I'm right here now." Interlocking legs with him, Penny pulled him into her chest but not too tightly. Letting out a sigh, Bolt whimpered and nuzzled Penny's neck. "I thought you were gonna die Penny... I was so worried." Penny gently caressed his neck, "Sssh... it's alright Bolty, I'm here."

A few hours later, Bolt eyes were closed and his breathing was slow and steady. Penny's room was dark and the only sounds that could be heard was the combination of Penny's and Bolt's soft breathing. In her sleep, Penny nuzzled against Bolt's soft body and sighed in contentment.
