I sat and stared at him without saying anything. “Say something!” He exclaimed in frustration. I would’ve laughed but he seemed so angry and I didn’t want to provoke into doing something stupid. “You don’t need to worry about it.” I told him slowly. “What the hell are you talking about? I just told you my whole life story and you don’t even have the courtesy to return the favour.” He growled furiously and I flinched. “I’m sorry Marcus. I will tell you but not now. I can’t have you changing the way you look at me.” I whispered. “I promise I won’t change anything.” He replied gently. “Trust me you will. Don’t fight it Marcus; I promise I’ll tell you eventually.” I told him smiling weakly.
We escaped a very awkward when Lia knocked on our bedroom door and then walked in. She looked at our facial expressions and paled slightly. “I can come back later if you want...” She suggested trailing off at the end. Marcus sighed in defeat and then walked out of the room. “Were you guys having a fight?” She asked me and I nodded sighing. “He asked about Stefan.” I explained. “Is that why he’s so pissed off? He’s annoyed about what Stefan did to you?” She asked and I shook my head. “I didn’t tell him.” I replied and a confused look crossed Lia’s pretty features. “Why not?” She asked. “I don’t want him to look at me with pity or like I’m a fragile piece of glass. I haven’t been able to have a normal conversation with a boy for the past year and I don’t want to go back to that.” I explained to her. “I’m sure he wouldn’t think of you any differently.” She replied. “I will tell him just not yet.” I told her with finality in my voice that told her not to argue and she sighed.
Hayley came up later and she came over and hugged me. “I thought something terrible was going to happen to you. I don’t know how you know that prick but he just looked evil.” She commented and I sighed. “I guess I have to tell you now.” I started and sat down on the bed. I explained my history with Stefan and she listened quietly. “I should’ve kicked his ass!” She exclaimed when I finished and I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. “Well I guess I should show you then.” She commented and she turned away from me. “It’s not as bad as it looks.” She whispered before lifting up the back of her top. Hayley had the skin tone that made it look like she was tan all year round but on her back I saw purple bruises. She turned towards me and lifted up the front to show that she had some on her stomach too. “My dad is an alcoholic and sometimes gets angry.” She explained as if she was talking about the weather. “I swear down you came last year?” I asked and she nodded. “He put me in hospital two years ago because he couldn’t stop beating the shit out of me. I came to this and moved in with my mum while he went to rehab. I went to visit for two weeks before I came here and he went back to his old ways. Now I have bruises as a constant reminder of his drinking problem.” She told me. “See if you were black, you wouldn’t have this problem because it wouldn’t show up on your skin.” I commented and both Lia and Hayley laughed.
I started to get worried about Marcus when it was coming up to eleven o’clock and he still wasn’t back. “Maybe he’s in Cory’s room?” Hayley suggested. “Let’s go check.” I decided and we all walked down to his room. On the way, we met my brother looking quite upset and a calmer looking Marcus. “Care bear hug?” Jay asked me and I folded into his arms. I almost forgot that we had people around us until I heard Marcus snicker. “What’s so funny?” I asked as I pulled back glaring at him. “Nothing.” He replied with a smirk and I narrowed my eyes at him. “Where were you guys going?” He asked changing the subject. “Hayley and Lia’s room.” I replied hurriedly. “You guys are on the wrong floor. Are you sure you weren’t doing something else? You weren’t looking for me were you?” He asked smirking. I didn’t reply and walked back up to our room.
They all followed me back up there. “Don’t let him wind you up.” Jay whispered in my ear and I smiled. “Why did you look so upset earlier?” I asked him. “My girlfriend was little bit pissed that I cancelled our lunch date.” He admitted. “Was that because of me? Why did you cancel?” I asked. “Should I state the obvious here? What happened to you earlier on today?” He replied and I rolled my eyes. “Don’t worry I’m meeting her in ten minutes.” He reassured me. “Can I come and apologise to her?” I asked and he sighed. “It’s not your fault. If anything it’s that idiot’s fault for even breathing the same air as you.” He growled. “I still feel kinda responsible and I’ll leave you alone to have a nice date.” I replied and winked at him. He caved and agreed for me to go and apologise.
“Do you guys wanna come with? So I don’t have to walk back to the hotel by myself?” I asked Marcus, Ella and Hayley. Ella looked very depressed and I bet it had something to do with the fact that Jason has a girlfriend. “I’ll come.” Marcus volunteered straight away. Ella looked like she was mentally debating whether she wanted to or not. “I’m kinda tired so I’m gonna hit the sack.” She told me before walking out of the room. “Young love always ends in heartbreak.” I muttered and Hayley laughed while the boys looked confused. “I think I’m going to give you and Marcus some alone time.” Hayley whispered in my ear before winking at me and walking out. “I guess you only have me.” Marcus remarked grinning and I rolled my eyes.
We walked down towards a cafe near the beach. I saw a pretty young woman looking a bit annoyed waiting in a booth next to the window. Jay quickened his pace and then walked inside. Her eyes brightened but her face was completely serious. She had chocolate brown skin and beautiful light brown eyes. She was medium height and slender. In short, she’s a beautiful black lady who was very pissed off with my brother. She opened her mouth to speak but then her gaze settled on me and Marcus. “Can I help you?” She asked icily. She was definitely in a very bad mood. “Hi I’m Jay’s little sister, Vanessa, and this is my friend Marcus.” I introduced us and her features softened a little. “I just wanted to apologise for my brother cancelling your lunch date. It was my fault; I got into some trouble earlier and my brother came to the rescue.” I explained to her. “Why didn’t you tell me that before?” She asked my brother. “I didn’t want to sound like I was making excuses.” He mumbled and she wrapped his arms around his waist. “Let’s get out of here.” I whispered to Marcus.
“I want to apologise to you.” Marcus told me as we walked back to the hotel. “For what?” I asked. “For getting pissed at you for not telling me about Stefan. I know you don’t want to talk about it.” He told me quietly. I turned to him, hesitating slightly before wrapping my arms around his neck. I felt him stiffen slightly before he wrapped his arms around my waist. I tried to ignore the warning bells of danger going off in my brain. I really wasn’t comfortable and I started to pull away. “Are you okay? I’m sorry if I went over the line.” He told me. “It’s okay. Let’s just get back to the hotel.” I said quickly. We walked back to our room in silence. I flopped on the bed as soon as I got in. “Good night Ness. Sweet dreams.” He told me as I drifted off.
