You nervously walk through the halls of the school you're going to spend your next whole year in. You're all following a rather extremely tall and hairy man, who you believe his name is Hagrid. Despite him being enormous, he has been very kind to all of you.

All the first year students stop walking at the end of the stairs. A rather tall and thin woman is waiting for you all.
"The first years, Professor McGonagall", Hagrid says with a smile.
"Thank you, Hagrid. I will take them from here", professor McGonagall says. As Hagrid leaves, she turns to look at you all again.
"Welcome to Hogwarts", she starts talking, and as soon as she does, everyone is quiet.
"The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room."

You look at your side, where Susan and Ernie are standing. You smile at them, then look back at the professor. All your emotions are mixing up. You're extremely excited, but also very scared and nervous. And you notice that Draco Malfoy is standing on your other side. You pay as less attention to him as you can and continue to listen to professor McGonagall standing in front of you.

"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honour. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours."

You smile brightly, but you can't help but to feel annoyed. Draco, still standing next to you, has been quietly muttering about how annoying he thinks professor McGonagall is. You decide to ignore him, and just listen to the professor.

"The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarted yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting. I will return when we are ready for you. Please wait quietly." And with that, professor McGonagall leaves. You anxiously try to flatten your hair, making yourself look decent.

"Stop being so anxious, it's annoying", Draco says as he looks at you. You immediately stop touching your hair and look in front of you. Then you notice Draco stepping out of the group.
"So it's true then, what they're saying on the train. Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts", Draco says. It makes everyone mumble quietly all of the sudden, but you have no idea what Draco's talking about. You look around you at the students, and notice that everyone is staring at a boy with black hair, and round glasses. He must be Harry Potter.
Draco walks up to Harry, and everyone's quiet again.
"I'm Draco Malfoy", he says. The boy with ginger hair next to Harry starts laughing quietly, and it makes you laugh quietly as well.
"Think my name's funny, do you ? There's no need to ask yours", Draco snaps at the red-haired boy. He immediately stops laughing and so do you. You thought that Draco was just being mean to you, because you wanted to sit in the same compartment as him, but apparently it appears that he's mean to everyone.
"Red hair," Draco continues, "and a hand-me-down robe. You must be a Weasley."
The boy with ginger hair blinks a few times, and starts to look at the ground.
You walk up to the boy and place your hand on his shoulder.
"Can you stop being mean for just once ?" You say as you look at Draco. You haven't been around him that much, but you figured he isn't a nice person.
You don't know where that just came from either - normally you're quiet, and don't stand up to other people. But right now you do.
"I didn't ask you anything, dumb little blonde."
You open your mouth to say something back to Draco, but Susan pulls at your sleeve and slowly takes you away from Draco.
"It's of no use, standing up against him."
You nod and look at the ground. You can hear Draco continuing to talk to Harry, but you can't focus on what they're saying anymore. You don't want to.

Finally, professor McGonagall comes back. Draco returns to his place, and the professor tells you all the you can follow her into the Great Hall.

The Great Hall is enormous. It is packed with all the students, all of them sitting at different tables. Candles are floating in the air, and the ceiling looks like the sky. It's as if you're outside.
"This is amazing", you say to Susan, looking your eyes out. And she's doing the same thing; she can't even give you an answer, because she is just as impressed as you are.

As you reach the end of the Great Hall, all the professors are sitting at a large table. In the middle is sitting a man with a huge grey beard. You look back at professor McGonagall as she starts talking.
"When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted", she said. You swallow and look around you. All the eyes of every student are pointed at you and the other first year students. It makes you even more nervous.
"Susan Bones", is the first name to be called. You turn around and see Susan nervously sitting down on the chair. Her hands are shaking as the hat is being put on her head.
"Hufflepuff !" The hat yells. Susan smiles happily and everyone in the hall, especially the students at the Hufflepuff table, are cheering loudly.
You are very happy for Susan of course, but you are still highly impressed by the Sorting Hat.
"It started talking", you say, staring blankly in front of you, as if you couldn't believe what had just happened.
"It did", Ernie chuckles. His name is being called right after, and also he is sorted into Hufflepuff. A few other students have to sit on the stool and get sorted into their houses, until it's Draco's turn.
"Slytherin !" The hat screams the moment the hat had barely even touched Draco's head. He gives you an evil smirk before walking towards the Slytherin table.

"Blanche Lightwood."

Now it's your turn.

You walk towards the stool and sit down on it. You're very nervous and you can hear your heart beating loudly.
Professor McGonagall puts the hat on your head, and it starts thinking deeply.
"Hmm. Strange. You're very brave, and kind, but also slightly cunning. Difficult", the Sorting Hat says. It takes you longer to get sorted into your house than other students. All eyes are still pointed at you and you start to feel anxious.

"Well, better be ..."

"Hufflepuff !"

Professor McGonagall takes the hat from your head and you get off the stool. You smile from ear to ear as you walk towards Susan and Ernie.
"We're all sorted into the same house !" Susan says excitedly. You're still smiling brightly.
"This is amazing", you say. You're glad you're not in the - bad house - same house as Draco. And you're glad that you can stay in the same house as your new made friends.

After the ceremony, the headmaster, Professor Dumbledore, says a few words, and then, dinner is served.
"Wow", you says as you look at your plate. Delicious food appeared on your table out of nowhere. You have never been able to do magic before, and you've never really knew much about it, but this was amazing. You are already in love with magic, and you haven't even seen everything you can do with magic yet. This year was going to be amazing, with your two friends at your side.
