I look out the door, to see the sky turn blue. I couldn't help but think about how far we've made it...I never thought I would live this long...luckily Fern didn't try anything.
It's been about five days, we killed off roamers that crossed the ditch so that way they wouldn't break inside....the problem was that Fern preferred not to kill any roamers.
I sit on the bed, opening my small journal Fern had given me.
I begun writing, since I have a lot to take in it's only best that I write it down, there are ways to handle stress.
But not only that, I needed to write things down so if I do die....Aurei will take them. I took my pencil and begun writing.
To kill a corpse, you stab it by the head....it's the only way. If you are reading this, there's no way around it....if you or someone else is bitten, you will have to put them down.
Trust NO one.
I stop when Dakota walks inside, I ignore his loud footsteps.
Until I feel cold hands grab my hand, I glare at him. Dakota stares at me.
"What are you doing?" Dakota asks.
"Writing....." I said quietly.
"About what? How you realized that I'm not a teddy bear?" Dakota asks, I kept hugging him until one time I scared him....which he won't admit....and almost broke my arm....so after her chewed me out about how he could've killed me I promised to not hug him out of nowhere.
"You're funny." I said rolling my eyes.
"Aurei is on the roof again...." Dakota said, I got off the bed then walked towards him, Dakota is pretty tall.
"Avery this isn't a damn fairytale." Dakota said.
"Where did that come from?" I ask, bewildered. Dakota just gives me a icy stare.
"Since you've been rubbing off of me I've been fantasizing about everything." Dakota said.
"Really?" I ask with a mellow tone, Dakota tilts his head to the side with a glare.
"No, I'm fucking with you." Dakota said as he rolled his eyes.
"You shouldn't change Dakota." I said, he raises his eyebrows.
"Thanks, I never intended to." He said with a smile.
I walk across the hall to see Fern reading something, I climb up the ladder to the attic that landed on Dakota yesterday, Aurei had been stargazing ever since.
As I walk through the attic, there was a hole that allowed Aurei to have access to the roof, I step through to see Aurei hugging her knees, I sit next to her.
"Hey." She said as she glimpses at me.
"What's going on with you? You kept sharpening your knife yesterday, and you haven't really spoke to anyone." I ask. Aurei looks at me.
"Can I tell you something?" Aurei asks.
"Tell me anything." I said, scooting closer to her.
"I never thought I would see you again." Aurei said, I wrap my arm around her shoulder, she looks at me.
"But I'm okay." Aurei said, running her finger against the roof in circles.
"You're not lying are you?" I ask.
Aurei looks me dead in the eye.
"Avery, if I was feeling bad....I would just tell you....you're my sister and sisters deserve to know the truth." She said, I grin.
"Come on." I said, reaching my hand out towards her, she takes my hand as she stands up, I step inside to see Dakota standinf there, alarmed, I wince and I clutch my chest.
"Jesus Kota! You scared us!" I said, clutching my heavily beating heart.
Dakota just turns around and walks climbs down the ladder, Aurei gives a warm grin.
It's been a while since she's smiled.
My thoughts go back on the day when Dad was wrestling with her on the couch, she was seven and I was fifteen.
Dad hovered over Aurei but Aurei just grabs the back of his shirt, they were both laughing until there was a loud thud and Aurei yelped.
Mom and I ran into the living room to see Aurei sitting on Dad, he smiled at Mom to show that he was okay, Mom bent over and kissed Aurei on the forehead before she walked back into the kitchen to finish making a goodie basket for our new neighbors.
"You're a strong kid Aurei." Dad praised, Aurei beamed at him.
"Thanks Daddy but I'm too small." Aurei said, he puts her on the couch.
"Your mother believed the same thing, but being small doesn't make you weak." Dad said, I walked over to them, Aurei smiled as Dad passed her a orange from one of the weaved baskets Mom had taught me to make.
"You're always strong because?" Dad asks quizzically.
"Because I'm Daddy's girl." Aurei admits with a small giggle, Dad nods then he gave her a long hug.
"Well I have to go. Be good." Dad said, ruffling her hair.
"I'm already good." Aurei said as Dad walked away.
"Because I'm Daddy's girl." She adds. Dad smiled then walked out the door, I looked at Aurei and she made room for me in the couch.
"How was school?" Aurei asked. She always had it easy, she only worried about patterns and shapes, yet she didn't go to preschool. The autumn sunlight shone on us and she rested her head on my shoulder.
"Hard....I almost fell asleep." I said. That day I nearly got in trouble because I cursed a kid out because he had picked on the color of my skin.
"How was your day?" I ask, Aurei shrugged.
"Easy. I'm ready for second grade now...." Aurei said with a grin.
"Enjoy childhood while it lasts." Mom said before she grabbed the basket.
"Now girls, which one of you wants to give this to miss Palmer?" She asked, and with that said, Aurei quickly got off the couch and put on her thick green coat.
I open my eyes, if I did somehow die, I would want to say a few things, I look at the notebook and the pen that awaited for me to continue something that I don't get to do everyday.
