--- Prologue ---
Kayla's POV:
// 5 years ago //
I tugged the ends of my jacket closer to my body as the rotting wooden walls groaned in retaliation. With the combined forces of the wind and heavy sheets of rain terrorizing the town, this rickety, dilapidated shed was not going to hold much longer. I released the nervous breath I was holding; it becoming a white puff in front of me as my eyes scanned over the dust covered interior.
He better get here soon...
I stiffened, as an almost inaudible shuffle coming from just outside my temporary shelter of the storm, reached my ears. I took a few cautionary steps back, just in case; pressing my back against the walls. The smell of rotting wood filled my nose as I breathed in deeply, desperately trying to slow my racing heart.
Please be him, please be him...
I jumped a few inches off the ground as the door swung open, the single bulb in the shed illuminated Luke's completely drenched body.
"Thank god," I exhaled in relief before wrapping my arms around him, despite the fact that he was sopping wet. "You scared me!" I laughed slightly, leaning back to plant a soft kiss on his lips. As I leaned in, he leaned away from me, leaving my lips puckered in the air.
"Luke..." I trailed off; hurt dripping from my words. "What's the matter?" He sighed, looking anywhere but directly in my eyes.
"Kayla, we need to talk..." He huffed, running a hand through his wet, dirty blonde hair.
"I kinda figured that when you texted me to meet you here at 11 at night during this storm." I laughed slightly, biting my lip as I waited for him to continue. Pain flashed across his face as his dark blue eyes connected with my lighter ones.
"We can't be seeing each other anymore, Kayla."
His words were like a punch in the gut, knocking the wind out of me.
"Wh-what?" The shock and hurt was blatantly obvious as I spoke, my heart seeming to drop down to my feet.
"I'm leaving, leaving to go tour with the guys." He sighed, searching my face for anything. Finding none, he continued. "This is a really big opportunity for us, an-"
"I know, I get it." I help up a hand, silencing him. "I understand how much this means to you guys, and I'm happy for you guys; I really am! But I don't understand why we have to…break up..." My voice cracked as I pushed back the tears that were threatening to overflow.
Sympathy and regret flashed across his face, before it went completely blank. "I need to focus on my music, K. I can't have some girl get in the way."
His words slashed and cut me like a million tiny knives. Each one embedding itself in my heart.
"Some girl?!" I laughed humourlessly. "Is that all I am to you? Some girl." I scanned over his features, desperately searching for any hint that he was joking. That Ashton Kutcher would pop up and the camera men would laugh at my gullible-ness, and Luke would apologize, kiss me passionately and hug the living daylight out of me.
But all that met me was silence, and his bored expression.
"I see how it is." I looked passed him, setting my jaw. "Have fun on your tour." I hissed before stomping out the door. I half expected him to grab my arm, and take me back, but as I got further and further away, getting more and more drenched as the rain and wind whipped me as I went along, my hope began to diminish.
