Luke's POV:

Re-cap:

Rage surged through me as I stalked closer. How dare they sit on her swing?! When they were about 10 feet away, more details became clearer. Raven black hair, flowing down to her mid-back, pale as snow skin tone, and dressed in a solid black sweater, blue distressed jeans and black toms.

Just as I was about to cry out to this stranger, invading my memories, she glanced ahead, giving me a good view of one half of her face.

And that's all I needed.

My voice died in my throat and my feet sunk into the ground as soon as her face came into view.

"K-Kayla?!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Her head whipped to the side, inhumanly fast; her fear-stricken blue eyes widening. My jaw grazed the ground as I studied her. She looked so different. Her hair was now a pitch black, instead of the warm brown it used to be, her cheerful blueberry eyes were about 10 shades lighter, and had a lifeless look in them. She was sickly pale, making look as if she was deathly sick, and skinnier than when I last saw her. After about 15 seconds of solid eye-contact between us, I blinked twice, breaking off the trance I was in.
"Kayla, oh my god." My voice, just barely a whisper croaked out as I took a few small steps towards her. Her facial expression made no change, nor did her body language. It looked as almost if she was....dead. "I missed you so much! I-Oh god I can't believe it." I shook my head in disbelief at the woman in front of me. Confusion plagued me as she still made no move to speak. "S-say something, anything, please! I-I'm begging you ple-"
"Luke." Her voice wrapped around me like a blanket, the sound so comforting. It was different than what I remembered, smoother, more dream-like. I felt as if I was in one of my fantasies again.  "What are you doing here?"
My face twisted into disappointment as that sentence registered in my mind. Her tone, it was almost, disgusted. Like I was a nuisance; unwanted.
"W-Well," I swallowed nervously before continuing. "Management decided to give us a year off, seeing as we've been working constantly for 5 straight years. So here we are." I laughed slightly, spreading my arms out to prove my point.
The coldness in her eyes melted into passion for a brief moment, before flickering into sadness, and anger. Fear began to trickle through my veins as she strode forward, standing now about a foot away from me.
"You think that after 5 years, you can come back here, and everything is all fine and dandy?" Ice laced her words, dripping with distain. I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. "You've caused me nothing but pain and heartache for half a decade, and now here you are, acting as if nothing happened." I was momentarily shocked at her close, threatening proximity. Her confidence has grown a considerable amount since last time I saw her, when we were both 15.
"I-I'm sorry, let me explain! Please i-"
Her pale, white hand silenced me again, like it did so many years before.
"Don't apologize; I got over it about, hmm, three and a half years ago?" She chuckled darkly, paired with a smirk. My heart cracked in two, as she whirled around, and began to strut away. Without thinking, my arm shot out, and wrapped around her hand. What shocked me the most was that it was ice cold. A split second after my hand made contact, she ripped it away, a hiss escaping her lips before she turned to face me again.
"Don't." She spat. She whipped her hair around, and began to walk away faster than she did before.
I knew nothing I would say could make her stop, but I gave it my best shot anyways.
"Kayla I still love you!" My distressed voice echoed out towards her, causing her to freeze. I panted heavily, waiting for any further movement on her part. As she slowly spun around, a single tear slipped down her cheek. An unsettling silence settled between us for nearly a minute and a half.
"if that's so, then why did you leave me." Her voice cracked, as she stood half facing me, half facing the forest.
I took a deep breath, before pouring out what I've been dying to tell her from the moment those words left my mouth in the shed.
"Ashton and the rest of the band made me break up with you. They said that management agreed and told me I couldn't have a girl "distracting" me and taking my attention away from our music." All the pent up passion and rage bubbled up inside of me, my voice gradually getting louder and louder. "They made me! I didn't want to, god no! I was and still am in love with you Kayla Johnston!"
My heart pounded in my chest as I watched her; watched her process everything. Her eyes swept over the ground, before breathing in deeply, and looking deep into my eyes.
"Even so, you could have denied them, you could've fought them for me!" She sniffed before taking a few deep breaths. She clenched her eyes shut, releasing a few more droplets of water that slid slowly down her porcelain face. "You chose them over me. I get it." She whispered softly, making my heart clench.
"No, Kayla, please I-"
"Even if I wanted to, Luke, I-I can't." Her voice was loud and vicious at the beginning, but died out as it got closer to the end. "I can't." She shook her head, choking on a sob as she stared into the distance. "Things have happened since you left. Bad things. Things that are too dangerous to be tampered with now." Regret and sorrow were the only emotions readable in her eyes as she stared at me.
"What do you mean bad things have happened?! Were you attacked by a gang?! A-Are you married, do you have kids, are you in a gang, what?!" I shrieked, striding over towards her. Every step forward I took, she took an equally large one backwards.
"Luke, I'm sorry. I-I can't see you again. Goodbye." One last tear escaped, before her face went blank; completely free of any emotion what-so-ever. She turned on her heels, and bolted between the trees.
After a few seconds, my mind began to process what just happened.
refuse to let her get away from me again.
I will not lose her.
I willed my legs to carry me further and further into the forest, desperately scanning for any sign of her. A sob bubbled up in my throat as I spun around on the spot, looking in every direction. The only audible sound, was the rustling of the leaves on the numerous trees surrounding me. I collapsed on the ground in defeat, curling into a fetal position; sobs wracking my body.
She was so close, but she just slipped between my fingertips.
My heart ached for her, even after the extreme differences I noticed. The damp leaves of the forest floor brushed against my face and body as I cried violently; digging my hands into the ground, grasping for anything to hold onto.
I've always wondered if I made the right decision or not, but now, this clarifies it completely.
I made the worst choice imaginable.
In that moment, I vowed to myself, that I would figure out what bad event was holding her back from me, what exactly happened while I was absent.
I just need to see her again.
I need her.
