"Matthew is suffering from a-a heart disease and the only way to survive is a surgery. The surgery costs twenty thousand dollars but all we have is six thousand. The hospital refuses to give us any financial aid and no one we have called yet will lend us money." She said as she cried and wept.
I started to panic. What's going to happen to Matthew? What about the cafe? Didn’t it have enough money?
"What about the cafe? Isn't there enough money there to pay for the surgery?"
"N-no, the six thousand we have is from the cafe, the rest of our money was put in to building the cafe one year ago."
I watched as she cried in distress. She felt hopeless and I started feeling the same. The sight of Matthew in this condition was as if a bullet struck my heart. I can't stay here any longer, the more I looked at them the more I felt out of breath. Matthew had become a part of my life and it would never be the same without him. I had to do something but what?
SNAP! I got an idea.
"What is your name miss?"
"Elizabeth."
"I need a couple of things from you that will help save Matthew."
"Elizabeth, do you have the money with you here?" She looked at me in confusion.
"Yes."
"Where?"
"We gave it to the hospital hoping that they would do the surgery, hoping that we could pay them the rest later, but they said it needed to be complete for them to operate, why?"
"Because were going to save Matthew."
Me and Elizabeth went and got what I needed then I told her to go back to Matthew as I went to the first floor to leave. I saw Rose sitting on the same chair. Her face pail and eye's red and tired. All she could do was worry and remind herself of her past with her father. I sat beside her as she stared at the floor hopelessly."Rose, I have good news!"
"What good news could there be? The doctor was clear and sure of what he said." She said as tears started sliding down her cold cheeks.
"They're going to do the surgery! Your dad's going to be ok!" I said, studying her face to see her reaction. She widened her eye's as if she saw a lion in front of her. Blood filled her cheeks and her mouth hung open in surprise.
"Dad's going to live? But, how? We don't have the money!" She said while her hands were covering her mouth and nose and as her red tired eyes were refilled with hope and faith.
"Yes! I talked to the doctor don't worry about it , but, your dad needs you to be by his side, I'm going out and I'll be back quickly."
"Ok, thank you!" Tears of joy and happiness began to run out of her eyes. She got up and ran to the stairs.
Ok Mike, time to go! I left the hospital and rented a cab home so I wouldn't waste any time. Me, leave my friend to die as I watched uselessly? Hell no! I went back home, washed my face and changed my cloths. I had a few other stops before going back to the hospital. One was to buy them fruits and food. I'm sure they're starving. I finished gathering everything I needed and headed back to the hospital. Making my way up to Matthews room. Rose and Elizabeth were sitting quietly outside.
"How's everything going? What happened while I was gone?" I wondered hoping that he was going to be ok.
"They've started the surgery five minutes ago and they say it will last a couple of hours."
"Thank God, he's going to be ok, don't worry!" I said to ease the worry and frustration that sunk into there heart.
I waited downstairs and stocked the clock, Watching it patiently while I continuously tapped my foot on the white ceramic floor. I walked back and forth until my leg's eventually started to fail and sat down directly in front of the black and white round clock. Seconds were like hours, each tick and tock took forever and the worry for Matthew made it even worse. I eventually lost track of time, watching the clock made me dizzy so I went to Rose and Elizabeth to see how they were doing. There sight was heartbreaking, they watched each doctor and nurse pass by wishing one of them would tell them that he's ok and will live.
"You guy's want something to drink?" I said softly. They both were lost in there eyes watching and observing, eventually it struck to them that I had said something.
"Sorry, what did you say?" Rose said.
" Do you want something to drink?"
"No thanks" they both said returning to what they were doing.
A few minutes later the doctor came to inform us of Matthews state. Rose and Elizabeth jumped off there seats and hurried to the man.
"What happened, will he be ok?" Elizabeth said.
"Was the surgery successful is my dad going to live?"
"Matthews state is currently unstable. We finished the surgery and it was successful but this kind of surgery needs a large amount of time for the patient to recover and stabilize. He'll be staying here in the hospital until he is ready to leave. Mr. Matthew going to be ok don’t worry."
Rose and Elizabeth exploded with happiness, they hugged one another as hard as they can and after minutes of hugs and cries of joy they turned to look at me.
"What did you tell the doctor? How did you convince them?" Rose insisted.
"I'm good at convincing people things I guess."
"No! tell me. What did you do?" She asked in curiosity.
"Mrs. Elizabeth, I forgot to give you this." The nurse said handing her a paper.
Both Rose and Elizabeth dropped there jaw's as they stared at the white sheet of paper before them. and then redirected there eye's back to me. Yup, they figured it out without a doubt.
