The door squeaked as I pushed it open. Robert was laying down with his right leg rapped and hung up, his hands were under his head as he turned his eyes to me and away from the TV in front of him. An old white haired man wearing casual clothes sat beside him turning his focus away from today's newspaper.
"Hello, am I interrupting?"
"No of course not young man. Please come in, come in." The elder said as he stood up to greet me.
"Thank you, how you doing Robert?" I said as I turned to face him.
He looked at me with for a second as if he was trying to remember who I was, then his eyes opened wider and he turned his face up to the ceiling.
"I'm pretty fine man. Thanks for what you did, I don't know how to repay you." He said while facing upwards. It almost seems that he feels ashamed of something. That he had something hidden inside him.
"You're welcome. I'm glad to hear you're okay." I said.
The old man put his newspaper aside and faced me. He looked at me with a broken hearted look in his eyes.
"Thank you young man for saving my grandsons life. He's all I have left and I don't know what I would have done if you weren't there to save him."
"Gramps don't go crying on me again now, I've seen enough tears for one day". Robert commented.
"I can't help it you know that and I don't need to take permission from youngster to feel sad". The old man exclaimed.
Robert sighed, I wondered what he meant by "He's all I have left". I focused on Robert to see his injuries. He had a strained leg, his arm was rapped as well most likely burned from the fire, his black hair was cut completely leaving it thin unlike always and his left eye purple probably because of the airbag.
"So what happened? I heard your blood pressure increased, did something happen"? I asked curiously, even though it was none of my business but I guess letting it out was better.
"Yeah, I was pissed off and my eyes just blurred while I was driving. After that I woke up here".
"Well thank God your ok, I want to see your kids. If you have any." The old man giggled.
"What the hell gramps!?" Robert exclaimed as he lifted an eye brow at his grandpa.
"Well Rob aren't you going to properly introduce me"? The old man said as he crossed his legs and rested his hands on his knee.
"Mike, this is my grandpa, Jefferson, and gramps, this is Mike. He's with me in class".
"It's a pleasure to meet you sir."
"The pleasure is mine, you can call me Jeff".
I stayed a little longer and then stood up to leave. I excused myself and opened the door to leave when Robert called my name.
"Mike, you know I do have money and I've noticed that you don't have a car. I also know that you work and walk everywhere. So I want to give you one of my cars. I don't drive it and it's perfectly clean. I hope you'll like it."
"What? I can't accept that! There's no way."
"Not your choice bruh, you're taking it. I have another car I'd rather drive anyway."
"I really don't know what to say, it wouldn't feel right. Just get well and we can talk about it at college".
"Okay." He said as he looked back at the TV.
I walked out of the hospital to be hit by the cold breeze. Fall had just started and it wasn't much longer until winter came. The sun had started to descend and the weather began getting colder. I whistled to a taxi and headed to Matthew's cafe to; one, eat because I was starving; two, to see if Matthews back up and running and three, to see what there gift was. Even though I'm not too big with gifts, I still can't help my curiosity.
The bells on the door chimed as always when I entered. I closed my eyes as the smell of delicious food filled my nose.
"Man do I love this place". I whispered to myself as I walked to a table. Old people, young people, families and friends all sat down in groups enjoying there meals in peace. This time the weather inside was a bit different, they had a nice quiet song being broadcasted from the speakers that were spread out around the cafe. Nick noticed me and came to take my order.
"Hey, hey look who it is, the hero. How are you doing today"?
"No need for the hero stuff haha, I'm fine thanks, and yourself"?
"I'm better, now that boss is back. It was a cafe was in distress without him".
"Matthews back? I'm so happy to hear. Tell him I say hi will ya?"
That's good news. Nick strolled off between the table's. Instantly after he disappeared the kitchen doors opened while Rose passed through them. She was wearing the cafe's uniform and had her red hair tied as a bun. I actually thought she couldn't get any prettier but from the sight of the mascara and lipstick she wore it turned out I was wrong.
"What a sight?" I huffed
"Hey, what?" She said as she looked at me curiously. Wait, did I say that out loud?
"Oh, nothing. I was just blown away from how great you look today."
"Stop kidding around, I'm so tired and I'm a total mess."
"Not kidding trust me, did you start working here or something?"
"You can call it, giving a hand. The cafe has to get back on schedule and I'm helping out."
"I see. Good luck."
"Thanks. By the way, it's a good thing you came. We have something for you."
'Hahaha it's finally time for the gift' I thought wickedly. I wonder what I'm going to get. No I have to stop thinking like that what's wrong with me. Well it wouldn't hurt to get a gift from a friend. No shame on me damn it.
I watched as Rose glided into the kitchen and before I knew it. Matthew popped out. He looked in tip top shape just like before.
"Mike, my man. It's great you're here!" He yelled as he walked towards me. When he got close enough he forced a hug of pride slamming his chest to mine."
"It's even greater to see you're fine, but, how did you heal so quickly. I'm surprised."
"We'll talk about that later". He said as he rubbed his heart as a wide smile formed on his face. That hug must have hurt him.
