Being instructed to put a blindfold on the second she slid into Luke's truck wasn't exactly how Sophie planned the afternoon of her eighteenth birthday to go, but she did so anyway, no questions asked. Well, except for one.
"Where are we going?"
Luke chuckled to himself, his hand resting on her own as he wordlessly memorised the way to go. "It's a surprise," he informed her.
"I know that," Sophie hummed, "But gimme a clue?"
"No, Sophie," he said, bringing her hand up to his lips before pressing his mouth against her knuckles in a kiss, "It'll give it away,"
"Or not. I'm kinda clueless," she pressed on, eager to know where the car was headed. But Luke just chuckled, moving his hand to rest on her thigh as he gave it a gentle squeeze.
"Patience, baby."
"Have you met me?" he could see her eyebrow raise slightly, "I'm the least patient person there is,"
"Well, try to be, just this once,"
"The stuff I do for love," the young girl sighed melodramatically, making Luke roll his eyes in amusement. He could definitely see where her impatience was coming from, but still- he wasn't one to give in so easily.
Sophie hummed quietly to herself, the song on the radio sounding ten times better with the knowledge that Luke was in the car with her, hearing it too. For some reason, sharing music with the one person that she loved the most made her heart feel giddy and her head almost dazed, for there'd always been something romantic about the way two separate people could interpret the same set of lyrics.
"Luke?"
"Hm?"
"Tell me a story,"
This time, it was Luke's turn to raise his eyebrow, and he did so while keeping his eyes on the road.
"A story?"
"Yeah," she nodded. She couldn't see him, but she had no doubts that he was currently looking at her with an expression of puzzlement, "About anything,"
"Anything," Luke echoed.
"Mhm. Like, your happiest moments. Your biggest achievements," leaning her cheek against the palm of her hand, she managed to face him without really facing him, the blindfold being the one thing that separated the two, "Just, the general things. You've never really told me about stuff like that, and I can't see anything, so I need some entertainment right now,"
"Well, that's because I'm not a very interesting person," Luke chuckled lowly, squinting in the distance and attempting to make out where they were, "And hey, it's your birthday. This is supposed to be about you,"
"But you know everything about me already," she whined slightly.
"You know everything about me, too," Luke noted, though he knew he was lying and silently hoped that she wouldn't pick up on it.
Sophie didn't know about Mia, or M, or what Luke used to do as a teenager. She didn't know that his past was much rougher than his present, or the fact that he viewed his life as having held zero meaning if it wasn't for his son and Sophie herself.
Luke reasoned that he hadn't told her yet purely because it was in the past. He vowed that he would tell her, eventually.
Just not when it was her birthday and he wanted everything to be absolutely perfect, with no obstacles in the way to contradict that.
Lacing their fingers together once more, he could feel her relax. It was hard for Sophie to figure out what Luke was feeling simply because she couldn't see his face, so the short pause that took place did nothing but make her feel anxious.
