“Hey hun! Oh, hi, Preston.” My mom was on the couch and my dad was nowhere in sight.

“I’ll meet you upstairs okay?” I said to Preston and he headed up with a, hi to my mom.

Preston was the exception who was allowed to sleep in my room, which is weird since he’s the guy who fell for me.

“Mom, is everything okay?” I asked moving closer.

“Your father is in the hospital.” She was smiling.

“Uh, what?” I asked getting angry.

“Not for his cancer. He’s in there for getting in a bar fight, a minor stab wound.” She said shaking her head. Then she started laughing.

“Mom! What’s your deal?”

“He’s stupid! He’s so, so stupid! I dedicated my life to you, to him. We lost a child, he got cancer, suddenly loses his job, and he decides drinking is the way to handle all of this! You know what I do? I pray. I’m not even religious! I’ve been praying since you’ve been born. All that low life does is drink. It’s so funny. Isn’t the man supposed to take care of the family? Even if he has cancer shouldn’t he have some pride? Dignity? I just don’t know what to do anymore.” She shook her head and I sighed.

“Mom, he’ll be fine. I mean hopefully. I’ll—I’ll talk to him.” I sighed out the last sentence I didn’t want to talk to him. I was angry at him.

“Hopefully he’ll listen to you. Tell Preston I said goodnight.” My mom headed upstairs wiping at her eyes.

“Goodnight.” I said following her up.

I went into my room and Preston was on my laptop looking at my Facebook. I blushed and slammed the computer shut. He tried pushing it back open and I snatched it away.

“What is your problem?” I asked filled with anger and embarrassment.

“You left it open. I just wanted to check mine. You have a message though.” Who would be writing me?

“Did you read it?” I asked as I opened the computer.

“No but I was tempted.” He smiled at me and I rolled my eyes.

I clicked it. It was a message from Fay. I wanted to roll my eyes again.

Fay Richardson

Hey ray i kno since i came bak we havent relly talked. i am going thru some shit and zoe was their for me. i want to say sry 4 how she was actin tonite. i dont think they r really engaged but u never kno. i want to take u out 4 coffe or sumthin so u can kno i relly am sry. we used 2 b the best of friendz but now look at us. lets start over. i miss u.

I tried to look past the horrible grammar and spelling. It made me want to puke but I read on. I couldn’t tell if she was sincere or not. I showed it to Preston and shuddered from rereading the paragraph. I didn’t think Fay would be the type to write like that. When she sent me emails she didn’t but she did capitalize every word, which was annoying as well.

“Write her back.” Preston said pushing the laptop towards me.

I pushed him over a bit and sat next to him on the bed.

“What would I say?” I asked.

“I don’t know just let her buy you a coffee. What’s the worst that can happen?” He asked and I shook my head.

“I don’t know.”

So I wrote her back
