Billie:

"Nice place you got here.." I looked around Melanie's tiny apartment, the living room connected into the kitchen which led to a tiny hallway with two bedrooms and one bathroom off to the side. It was.. Well.. A dump to say the least but her efforts to make it into a home didn't go unnoticed. Pictures of her and Lilly hung all over the walls. One picture in particular stood out to me, they were at the park sitting at the bottom of a slide, Lilly was on Melanie's lap laughing, Mel was looking up at the sky smiling her dark hair shined golden from the sun. Something about it warmed my heart. The apartment was spotless aside from a few toys laying here and there. I took in the scent of cinnamon vanilla as I made myself comfortable on her couch.

"I'm sure it's nothing like where you live but it's a place to plant our roots. For now.." She replied, handing me a cup of coffee. For now? What's that supposed to mean? She sat down next to me pulling her legs up to her side. I watched as she stirred a spoon around in her cup. "Since when do you drink tea?" I tilted my head to the side. "Since when do you ask so many questions?" She laughed quietly. I thought for a moment before answering. "Since I haven't seen you in almost ten years." I said manor of fact like. She looked up from her tea and for the first time since I found her our eyes met. I held her gaze for a second and that's when it clicked, the manager from that diner was right, she had a story to tell.

Melanie was never much of a talker and she never needed to be. Her looks alone entrapped everyone around her. In high school she had a lot of friends, made straight A's, homecoming queen and by the middle of junior year she had earned the title of the bad boys girlfriend. She was the envy of every girl and I of course was the envy of every guy. We were a regular Jack and Diane love story. I promised that one day I'd pay the bills with my guitar and she would be the worlds most incredible mother to all four of our children. We had it all planned out, it was like something out of a movie. Until it all ended..

"I bet you never thought my life would be like this." She was staring down, frowning. I lifted her chin with my finger. "You're right, I didn't.." I looked into her eyes. "I always pictured you living this life with me." I felt a flood of relief wash over me as she began to laugh hysterically. I to began to laugh until both of us were in tears. "I'm so happy for you Billie.. You're an incredible man with a beautiful family and the career of your dreams. That's all I ever wanted for you, ya know?" She smiled shyly. I could of died right then and there overjoyed and fulfilled knowing she felt this way. Since day one she only ever cared about my own happiness, never her own.

Before I could stop myself the words were spilling out. "Melanie, who is Lilly's father?" For whatever reason I was terribly jealous of him. I needed to put a name to the face I had imagined.

She let out a long sigh. "I knew this day would come eventually.."
