Billie:
I stood outside of Melanie's apartment door debating on if I should ring the bell or run.
Fuck it.
The door clicked as someone on the other end unlocked it.
"Billie Joe?" Melanie stood in front of me, she tied her silk robe tight around her waist. Oh god she's so perfect. "What are you doing here?" She asked snapping me out of my trance.
"Uh. I got kicked out." I pointed awkwardly in the direction of my house as if it was right next door. It felt like high school all over again. She laughed amused but worried.
"Come in." She waved me into the living room where Lilly was sitting on the couch, her eyes were glued to Barbie on the tv. She wore a purple flannel pajama set, her hair was in a tight bun on top of her head.
"Who're you?" She asked looking at Melanie for a response. I stood there awkwardly allowing Melanie to answer in whatever way she felt appropriate.
"A friend of mine." She smiled at me reassuringly.
"Oh." Lilly began. "Aren't you Joeys dad?" She asked again eyeing me down now.
I nodded. "Yeah I am.. Can I sit with you?" I asked her, pointing to the couch.
"Mhm." She giggled patting the spot next to her. "Do you like Barbie?" She looked at me her eyes big and wide filled we excitement. "Are you kidding? Me and Barbie go way back!" I joked. "Wanna know a secret?" I whispered in her ear. "Yes." She smiled whispering back. "Barbie had a crush on me, she asked me out on a date." I said manor of fact like. "But I turned her down, I was in love with someone else." I glanced over at Melanie and winked. Lilly's mouth was now in an O shape. "Liar!" She yelled laughing hysterically, I began to laugh too.
"Sweetheart, it's time for bed." Melanie gave her a look that said I know I always kill your fun but that's just what moms do..
"Awe.." Lilly whined. "Billie?" She looked over at me. "Will you come back?" Hearing her ask that forced me on the verge of tears. "Of course I will." I half smiled as she ran off to her room.
"I'll be right back." Melanie said before following behind Lilly. The apartment was quiet and all of the lights were off or dimmed. After about ten minutes of watching Barbie plan her next big sleepover I decided to go in search of Mel. It wouldn't be hard seeing as the entire place was just about the size of my closet back at home.
I knocked quietly on the door that I assumed was her bedroom and peeked inside. She was standing at her window looking out into the distance.
"Hi." I whispered. She began closing the curtains.
"Hi." She walked towards me slowly. As she got closer I moved my arms around her waste and looked into her eyes. My forehead was pressed against hers.
"It's been a while." Her arms were now around my neck.
"Tell me about it." I whispered as I leaned in closer.
Our lips touched I pressed them hard against hers and we started to kiss. I slid her robe off and watched as it fell to the ground. We continued to kiss while I picked her up and placed her onto the bed. She pulled my shirt off from underneath me, I sat up slightly to take my pants off and then pushed my body against hers. She moaned as I slid inside of her.
I had thought of this moment and being with Melanie in this way again a lot through out the years. I knew it was wrong but it was something I never imagined actually acting on. I guess dreams really do come true..
"Billie." She yelled breathlessly as I collapsed next to her. She pulled the covers up over us and laid down on my chest. Like she always did after sex. I kissed the top of her head and closed my eyes, allowing myself to drift off to sleep peacefully with her in my arms.
Later on that night I woke up restless. I pulled my guitar out of it's case and sat down on the edge of the bed. She was curled up in the blankets still asleep.
I began to play her favorite song from high school.
We met down at the floatin' dock
She snuck out scared, she might get caught
We were nervous, but it was worth it
There was no such thing as consequence
With her in my arms it finally made sense
In that moonlight, I saw her tan lines
Every time my feet are danglin' in the water
I can't help but think about her
Lyin' there with her wet hair
Didn't know what we were doin' but we didn't care
That old wooden dock was warm on our backs
T-shirt for a pillow and just like that
She kissed me like she meant forever
We were too damn young to know any better
The fog rolled in, she said "I better go"
She took my t-shirt and wore it home
A memory, a souvenir she could keep
So I stayed and watched that sunrise
Like it was wakin' up my life
To what love was, I can still see us
Every time my feet are danglin' in the water
I can't help but think about her
Lyin' there with her wet hair
Didn't know what we were doin' but we didn't care
That old wooden dock was warm on our backs
T-shirt for a pillow and just like that
She kissed me like she meant forever
We were too damn young to know any better
I finished the last verse and looked up to see her smiling.
I think this is where I'm supposed to be...
