Author's Note: It starts off with where it left off with Mathew talking with Tony at the bar.

----------------------------

~ Mathew's POV ~

I was about to respond to his question as to why I am looking for her... well a lie as to why I am looking for her when the bartender interrupted me. Why do people keep interrupting me?! I am getting pissed!

"Is there a problem here, Tony?" the bartender asks the guy sitting next to me who apparently is named Tony.

"This guy is looking for Maxine." Tony told the bartender looking at him intensely as if he could communicate with the bartender through his eyes. Funny no one can do that.

Suddenly the bartender turns to me and gives me a death glare.

"Why are you looking for Maxine? Who are you?" He said said through a clenched jaw.

What's up with all these guys defending her? Isn't it supposed to be her best friend defending her like this? Does she even have girl friends?

"I am looking for Maxine because I am an old family friend. I was friends with her brother." I said smoothly. They look at each other then back to me.

"Why are you looking for her then? Her brother couldn't have sent you because he doesn't give a rat's ass about Maxine." Tony said.

"Look, I wasn't only friends with her brother, I was friends with the whole family; including Maxine. And what makes you think her brother doesn't give a shit about her? You don't know him." I said calmly, but only I wanted to do was scream at them. How dare they tell me what I feel about my sister if they don't even know me!

"Yeah, because a brother who loves their sister would leave her without family at the age of seven. A seven year old little girl had no food, no money, no family, and no place to live in. Her brother is a monster." Tony tells me angrily.

"I am honestly surprised she lived through all the shit she went through." The bartender says, but more to himself.

"Francis! Don't say stuff like that!" Tony yells to Francis, the bartender.

"Sorry man didn't mean it in a bad way. What I meant was to enphisize how strong Maxine is, most people, especially girls, would have died in the streets or lived much worse than Maxine is now." Francis replies while continuing cleaning the beer cups.

"What kind of shit did Maxine go through?" I ask more quietly.

Tony and Francis scoff. "A lot of shit man, a lot of shit." Francis responds in a small voice, looking a little pained as well as Tony.

"Shit that isn't our place to say." Tony says a little more forcefully.

"So, let me get this straight" I say trying to fully understand what they are saying, "Maxine lived much worse than she does now in this shitty neighborhood? No offense or anything." I say the last part quickly in case they have guns or knives, I don't want to start drama.

"Nah, man none taken." Francis says laughing a bit.

"Yeah, dude we know this place is a shit-hole. But to answer your question, yes she lived much worse than she does know." Tony says.

"Yeah considering before was the streets. She even slept on those streets without a rag or card-box. And let's just say not even the hobos, let alone rats wanted to sleep on the bare streets. That's why rats have holes and hobos have boxes." Francis explains.

"At least now she has an apartment, money, and everyone fears her and some even love her because she's... amazing..." Tony trails off, with a dreamy look in his eyes. Weirdo!

"Ok... Anyway that's... horrible." I say slowly. I can't believe Maxine had to go through all that because of a choice I made, but I didn't have a choice...

"Yeah... so anyway you haven't really told us why you are looking for her...." Francis trails off.

"Um, I just wanted to see how she's been doing after so long." I reply.

"Why now?" Tony asks.

"I've been busy these past years and I haven't seen the family in a long time. Then I found out what happened to Maxine and I wanted to see how she was doing... I also wanted to know if she has changed in attitude..."

"Well, yes she has changed. But I can't tell you how much because I've only known her for seven years. Tony on the other hand has known her longer than anyone around here and she has told him everything about her." Francis says.

"Yeah, she has changed, but she had too. I mean she has always been strong mentally and physically, but her attitude had to change if she wanted to survive around here." Tony says with a pained look in his eyes. Why do his eyes have that sparkle when talking about her. I don't get it.

"How has she changed would you say?" I try to keep them giving me information about Maxine to see how dangerous she is.

"Well, for starters everyone around here fears her. Even her friends, except me because I know who she truly is deep down. She had to learn to fight viciously, fight with knives, and even guns. She hides her emotions and now seems like a robot. She's tough and everyone knows she's not one to mess with." Tony says.

"So is she capable to I don't know... kill someone?" I ask carefully to not anger them seeing as they seem protective of her, especially that Tony guy.

Francis and Tony share a look before they bust out laughing. Tony is clutching his stomach leaning back on his chair laughing like a maniac, while Francis has his head on the bar pounding a fist on the counter while laughing hysterically. What's wrong with these retards?!

"I-I c-can't believe y-you jus... just... said that!" Francis tries to say while laughing uncontrollably.

"Maxine couldn't kill anyone." Tony busts out laughing even more along with Francis.

"But you said everyone fears her and she fights with guns and knives and is vicious." I says a little frustrated with their irritating laughter.

"Yeah, but she only harms them." Francis says while trying to control his laughter.

"You see she only stabs them or shoots them in the arm or leg or foot, but never in a place where it could kill them. She wouldn't even harm them if it wasn't for the fact that they try to kill her." Tony says with reduced laughter, but amusement in his eyes.

"Why would people try to kill her then?" I ask completely confused.

"Dude! Everyone tries to kill everyone around here. She only defends herself and makes sure to scare the living shit out of them so they won't try to mess with her again, but she would never kill them." Tony says like I'm some kind of moron.

"I mean there are some stupid enough to keep going after her and she puts them in the hospital, but again she would never kill anyone!" Francis says.

I nod and finish my drink. I say good-bye to them and get up from my seat. I walk over to my impala and was lucky enough to see her in one piece. I get in the car and drive to my motel. I walk in the room and lay on the bed.

I can't believe this. Everything Maxine had to go through, how she had to change who she is and become dangerous. The way she had to live. She seriously went through deep shit and she seems fine. She has survived living in that horrible place and all those two guys could say was how great she was. She was great... no she was amazing, but that doesn't change the fact that she was somehow involved in this murder, if she isn't the killer. But those guys said she would never ever kill anyone, not even people who tried to kill her. I am so confused! Why couldn't I have a simple life and have a normal relationship with my sister. Oh, that's right because...

I couldn't finish my thought because sleep overtook me into complete darkness.
