A few hours later the van stops. I can't see anything outside because the back of the van has no windows. The van's door slides open forcefully. Jared grabs my arm tightly and hauls me out of the van. No words are or have been exchanged since he pushed me inside the van.
He drags me inside an old building up that's being remodeled. There are a few men walking around here and there. It's quiet except for the footsteps of those walking, and Jared's and I's.
We walk into a bland office. The sun shining in through the dirty window. There is a desk with a big dusty cushy chair behind it and two small dusty chairs in front.
"Sit." Jared commands pointing to one of the smaller chairs.
Not in the mood to argue with him, I sit. My brain is much too tired to start an argument with this idiotic asshole. Plus I'm actually kind of curious as to why he wants to talk to me. I am confident nothing will happen to me. I think I will be able to get out of this situation if it happens to get sticky.
He walks around the desk and sits in the big cushiony chair. He puts his feet on the raggedy desk and intertwines his fingers behind his head. He tilts his head up as if looking at the ceiling, but closes his eyes and sighs.
I sigh deeply. "Jared what do you want? I'm not in the mood for games." I say sounding tired even to my own ears.
He chuckles quietly. "Why's that? Had a long conversation with the NSA?"
"We didn't talk about the murder."
"Then what did you talk about?" He asks taking his feet off the desk, sitting upright, and folding his arms on top of the desk.
"Not the murder." I simply say.
"The only conversation you and the NSA would have is about the murder." He says leaning in slightly closer.
I sigh and look up at the ceiling. Then I look back down at his eyes. "It wasn't about the murder. I would tell you what it was about, but the only thing that concerns you is the murder, which the conversation wasn't about."
"Maxine if you dare tell them what happened that night I swear-" His voice was getting louder and louder with each word, but I cut him off.
"I'm not! I know what will happen if I tell them, but please at least help me prove that I didn't do it." I all but beg.
Jared laughs at me as if I just said the funniest thing in the world. "You think we are going to help you? Haha. You are hilarious. What makes you think we should help you?"
I was beginning to get angry. What makes me think they will help me?! He knows damn well I had nothing to do with this murder it was all...
"Don't even bother answering. We aren't going to help prove your innocence. If we do who is going to take the fall if all goes wrong? If we prove you didn't do anything, then they will keep investigating further and find out who actually did this and we can't let that happen. You know what you got into when you signed up for this." Jared says, his tone as evil as he is.
I stand up from my seat and slam my hands on the desk. "I didn't sign up for this! I was 14! I was just looking for something to eat! I ended up at the wrong place wrong time! I wouldn't have snitched but 'Boss' said he would kill me if I didn't join. Hell he wasn't even going to give me that choice he was just going to kill me! I made the wrong choice. I should've let him kill me, but at the moment I was in-" I cut myself off. He doesn't need to know I was in love. If he finds out I am in love he will go to all ends to find out who it is I'm in love with and use Tony against me.
This is why love is a huge weakness.
"You were in what Maxine?" Jared asks now fully interested.
"I was in debt with a friend." I say nonchalantly.
He nods. He seems to half believe me half not.
"As for the wrong place wrong time, that's not our fault. It's yours." He says leaning back on the chair.
"It wasn't my fault!" I yell at him as if he was stupid.
"Then who's fault was it?" He asks uninterested.
"It's my stupid family's fault!" I yell and instantly regret it. They didn't know I had family and now they do.
"Family. Is that so? How is it your family's fault?" He asks giving me his full attention, not that I want it.
"They abandoned me when I was very young. I didn't have a choice but to live on my own." I reply as vaguely as I can.
"Why did they abandon you?"
"I don't know." I say honestly. I still don't understand why he left me.
"How old were you when they left?"
"I can't remember that was years ago." I lie. Of course I remember the day my brother abandoned me and ruined my life.
"Any siblings?"
"No." I lie again.
"What are your parents names?"
I raise an eyebrow. "Why does that matter?"
"Because I'm going to help you find out what happened to them."
"Why would you help me?"
"Because I'm curious too."
"Curiosity killed the cat."
"Good thing I'm not a cat."
We are both silent for a moment.
Should I tell him?
Do I even want to know what happened to them?
"Louis and Stella Hexs." I tell him.
He smirks. He pulls out a laptop from one of the drawers and starts typing away.
I might actually find out what happened to my parents...
