I wake up early this morning and take a quick shower and change. I gotta get to the bar. I go to a coffee shop before I head to the bar. I order a black coffee and a scone. I eat it quickly and head to the bar.
I wonder what Francis is going to tell me...
I got to the bar, I park right in front of the bar, and hop off. The bar seems closed. Is he not here? I look around and don't see any cars. I consider leaving, but shake my head. Maybe he walked and hasn't opened yet.
I walk up to the door and knock. The door swings open, but don't see anyone there.
What the f*ck?
I walk in. It's completely dark. I grab my gun from my waist band and hold it up preparing myself in case I have to shoot.
"Hello Agent Hexs. What's with the gun? Scared of the dark?" A familiar female voice teases.
I hold my gun down knowing who it is, but not trusting to fully put the gun away.
"Maxine. I thought you ran. What do I owe the pleasure to you calling me?" I ask keeping my alerts high.
"Going behind my back and talking to my friends? Uncool Mathew, uncool. What did you think, that I wouldn't find out? I'm too smart Mathew. We didn't have family friends. They all hated us... our parents. That's why I didn't have a place to go after you ABANDONED me." She says in a cool shilling tone.
"I had my reasons, Maxine. If I could go back and change things I would. I loved you so much Maxine." I respond sincerely.
"You know what's wrong with that sentence? The going back and changing things because you never can and the LOVED part." She says in a grim tone.
"Maxine, I'm truly sorry. If I hadn't left you we wouldn't be in this situation."
"Why did you leave me? What were your reasons for leaving a SEVEN year old girl without family?"
She asks, her tone harsh.
"I can't tell you. I couldn't tell you then and I can't now." I respond softly.
She laughs bitterly.
"Of course you can't. I'm the little sister who is always kept in the dark right?"
I don't respond. A part of me that is still that teen that loved his baby sister so much that would do anything for her wanted me to run up to her and hug her tight and say sorry over and over again. But there is also the part of me that is an agent. I can't go up to her knowing she was most likely involved in a murder. We both have changed so much. I just don't know if I have changed for the better...
"Mathew... Why can't you please let me go? Please. I didn't kill anyone I swear. I wish I could tell you what happened but I... can't." She said the last part in just above a whisper.
"I'm sorry Maxine, but I have a job to do. If you are holding any information and don't tell us we can charge you also." I say firmly.
"I can't tell you because I don't know what happened. I wish I knew, but I don't. All I know is that I didn't kill anyone. I would never kill anyone. You raised me for seven years, you should know that." Her voice wavered as if trying to stop the pleading in her tone, but failing.
I want to believe her, I do. I just can't. Not without evidence. Evidence answers all questions and wonders with truth. That's the way I was trained. I can't help it.
"Maxine it doesn't matter if I raised you for seven years. Without evidence that you didn't kill someone I can't let you roam free. Besides you said so. I only raised you for seven years. Ten years you were alone and god knows what you've done or learned throughout those years..." I trail off not knowing what else to say.
"Yeah and I wonder who's fault that is." She replies sarcastically.
"Believe it or not it wasn't fault."
She scoffs in disbelieve.
"It wasn't! At the time I thought I didn't have a choice. I was obligated to leave you. I didn't want to, but I had too. If I didn't you would've been in grave danger."
"And leaving a seven year old to fend for herself in this world is putting her in danger?! Mathew you have no idea the shit I have gone through!" She yells angrily.
I don't answer.
~Maxine's POV~
I'm seriously pissed off right now.
If he would've stayed with me we could have protected each other. Like family. But no! He had to leave me and I had to protect myself. I had to witness things no children should. I had to witness a murder and be dragged into a huge mess because he couldn't stay with me.
"I just wanted to tell you to stop trying to investigate about me through my friends. I don't want you anywhere near them. They have nothing to do with this." I say harshly.
I stand up from the stool by the bar and walk towards the door.
"Wait!" Mathew's voice causes me to freeze on the spot. "I can't let you go."
I laugh, but there is no humor behind it. "You have no evidence to keep me locked up." I say and begin walking.
"Fine. Let me ask you one question."
"What?" I ask in a bored tone.
"If you're not guilty, why did you run or hide?"
I chuckle lowly. "I didn't run or hide from you."
"Then who?"
"Some people looking for me that want to cause trouble. Coming here and talking to you was dangerous enough. I have to go." With that I leave before he can say anything else.
The cold air hits my face as soon as I step out of the bar. The bar will open in a few minutes. It's barely going to be noon. I have to get back to the safe house before Gordon worries.
I wrap my arms around my torso to keep a little warm and also for a sort of steadiness after everything Mathew said.
What did he mean he was obligated to leave me?
Who made him leave me?
So many questions were swirling in my head I didn't even notice I passed Gordon's car.
I turn around to head back to the car.
I'm almost at the car when I'm grabbed from behind and slammed against a cold brick wall.
The person slaps a hand over my mouth. I open my eyes and see Jared.
"We need to talk Maxine and I'm not taking no for an answer." He says into my ear.
Right then a black van stops in front of us and he pushes me in. The van drives off.
