“Ate, kain na tayo.” I saw Rei peeking from the door. “Ate?”

I showed her a small smile.

“Are you alright, Ate?” She went inside the room and sat next to me on my bed.

I tried so hard to give out a believable response. “Oo naman. Bakit?

Rei just sighed as she brushed some of my hair off of my face. “Just a few months ago, ako ang nasa posisyon na ‘yan, Ate,” she said. “And you were there to make me feel better. Come on, Ate. Kapatid mo ako. At least let me do what you did for me nung ako ‘yung nasasaktan because of Kris.”

I sighed at what she said. “I don’t know what to do anymore, Alex.” I stared at the emptiness of my room. Or was it my heart that’s empty, I don’t know.

“Do you still love Kuya Seth?”

I instantly looked at her. “I never stopped loving him, Alex.”

“Then, why do you have to suffer all this pain? Hindi ba sabi mo sa’kin walang perfect relationship? But there’s perfect love that can overcome every painful memory.” From the corner of my eye, I could see her worried face as she reminds me of the same thing I told her months ago. “‘Yung pagmamahal niyo ni Kuya Seth para sa isa’t-isa, ‘yun ‘yung perfect love nyo, Ate. Stop dragging yourself down dahil sa nangyari. You have to get up and pull yourself together. Mahal mo si Kuya Seth. Fight for that love.”

I did not respond. I continued to stare at the white wall. I wanted to, gusto ko sanang isagot sa kaniya. I actually planned to come to him first. Pero pinanghinaan ako ng loob. Naunahan na naman ako ng takot ko na baka i-reject niya lang ako; na baka hindi na niya ako kayang tanggapin pa.

I let out another sigh.

“For now,” Rei added, “kumain ka na muna. It’s been days na hindi ka kumakain ng maayos, Ate. Paano kung biglang dumating si Kuya Seth dito at ganiyan ka niyang maabutan? Do you think he’ll be happy?”

She dragged me out of my room at pinilit akong kumain.

She was right. Nung siya ‘yung nasasaktan dahil sa nangyari sa kanila ng boyfriend niyang si Kris, ako ‘yung nagpatatag ng loob niya. Ako ‘yung nagpaalala sa kaniya na magiging maayos din ang lahat. Pero bakit ngayong ako na ‘yung nasa lugar na ‘yun, hindi ko magawang paniwalaan ‘yung mga sinabi ko sa kaniya?

We were still eating nang tumunog ‘yung doorbell. Rei got up from her seat at pinagbuksan ‘yung bisita.

“Good evening, Bianca.”

Agad akong napalingon and saw Sean by the door. I admit I was hoping it was Seth. Pero paano mangyayari ‘yun? Apat na buwan na kaming walang komunikasyon.

“Sorry kung hindi ako nakapagpaalam na pupunta ngayon,” he said with a smile.

“No, it’s okay. Pero bakit…”

Hindi ko pa man natatapos ‘yung tanong ko, nagsalita na siya. “Available ka ba bukas?”

“Bukas?” Sinubukan kong mag-isip pero walang pumapasok sa isip ko. “Bakit?”

Ngumiti siya ulit. “Gusto sana kitang yayaing lumabas. You know, for old time’s sake?”

And I saw myself saying yes to his invitation. Wala naman sigurong masama doon. He was still my friend, and I owed him a lot. Besides, he’s been working on patching things up with his best friend turned ex-girlfriend.
