Shoot.

Shoot, shoot, shoot. John messed up BIG time. He confessed to Alexander that he thought Alex had friendzoned him, and Alex said that his own confession was a joke?? He must be disgusted by John now....

John wasn't entirely sure exactly what happened, but the next thing he knew, he was out the door and running down the street. At first, he heard someone shouting his name from behind him, but it quickly faded into the distance.

John made it to his house and ran inside, slamming the door shut and pressing his back against it. He was sweaty and panting heavily. Slowly, he slid to the floor and buries his face in his arms. Hundreds of thoughts were running through his mind. Why did he say that? Was Alex actually joking? Was their friendship ruined? Had John gone too far?

John started to cry into his sleeves. Nothing was going to be the same now.

His phone buzzes with a text, and he lifts up his tear-stained face. John pulls his phone out of his pocket, wiping away his tears, but as soon as he sees the sender - Alexander - he turns his phone off and tosses it away. He doesn't want to talk to Alex - he's probably saying how awful John is and how he's never going to speak to John again....

John covers his head with his arms, choked sobs getting muffled by his sleeves. All of his emotions that he's been trying to hide come crashing down on him all at once, making his head swim. He wants someone to be there, he wants to be comforted. At the same time, he doesn't want anyone to see him like this. He needs to be strong.

But he's not strong.

He's just John.

A half hour later, John had calmed down enough to move to his couch. He was about to break down again when a knock at the door snapped him out of his thoughts and brought him back to reality. He stood up, wiped his face on his sleeves, and goes to the door, opening it.

Alex was standing there, worry etched across his face. "John, please, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you upset, I-I only said that because I thought you were joking, too...."

John started to close the door, but Alexander stopped him. "John, please listen to me. Please don't shut me out."

John hesitated, then opened the door again. Alex continued.

"I got worried, you weren't answering any of my calls or texts...."

"My phone is shut off," John mumbled, staring down at the floor.

"That's not the point. The point is, I'm sorry. I wasn't actually joking, I just didn't want to seem suspicious if you were joking...."

"Well, I wasn't, okay!?" John snapped, looking at his friend.

Alexander didn't even flinch. "I wasn't, either, John.... I actually did think I had been friendzoned. I've been thinking that for a while now...."

"... You're not. But I know I am."

"John, the only reason we're in the friendzone is because each person thought that the other was friendzoning them! I... I really, really like you, John. Please, don't leave me."

John could feel heat creeping into his face. "... You do...? Or is this just your way of trying to make me feel better?"

"It's not, I swear! I really care about you! I just... I thought you didn't think about me in the same way...." Alex looked down, staring at the ground.

After a few seconds, John hugged Alex tightly. Startled, Alexander took a few seconds to wrap his arms back around the other boy.

John pressed his face into Alex's shoulder. "I care about you, Alex.... I care about you so much, I don't ever want anything to come between us...."

"I...." Alex thought for a moment. "Well, as I don't know what else to say, I guess all I can say is... I feel the same way. So can we please get past this?"

John nodded a little bit. He held onto Alex a little longer before pulling away and wiping at his eyes again. "... Thank you for accepting me...." Ever since John had come out as gay, the only people who accepted him were Lafayette and Hercules. Now, finally, here was someone who not only accepted him, but loved him the same way.

Alex smiled at him. "Of course I accept you, John. I more than accept you. And it's okay, I'm here. You don't need to be worried."

John nodded again, sighing shakily. "I know.... Thank you."

Alex stepped inside, shutting the door behind him. "... Hey, John?"

"Yeah?" John looked up at Alex.

And Alex kissed him.
