"Are you ready to go?" Annie yells from downstairs. Her voice is mellow and soft, so soft that you only just hear her faintly. You'd think she's outside in our untidy front lawn - that hasn't been dealt with for a while.
"I'll be down there in a sec," I yell back.

I place the last pile of clothing in my pine green suitcase and close it shut. Finished at last. I've been selecting what I need to take and what I don't need to take for the last week or so, packing away the things I'm not taking with me to college. College. The place where we are supposedly going to "start over". A new beginning. A new chapter in our lives; whatever cliché you'd like to call it.

She stated that we needed a fresh start, she can't stand it here anymore. Neither of us can. Not after all the things that have happened to both of us. Prim, Gale and the accident they have all shaped Annie and I into the people we are today - in good ways and bad.
"Kat are you ready?" Annie says dragging me out of my thoughts.
"Hold on," I say
I rise from my bed and walk to the bathroom, the cool white tiles send chills up my spine from the cold. I walk towards the basin where the mirror hangs and make sure my dark hair looks presentable.

As I look at my reflection I see a broken girl, a girl who is shattered and unfixable. The bags under her eyes, they represent her sleepless nights, nights where no one can tame the dreadful dreams that come with losing some one you're certain you love. The scars that mark her arms, they tell another story; one that hasn't even been shared with anyone not even Annie. This girl is me. Some of the most unthinkable have happened and have taken form into who I am today-and this is the aftermath.

"You look fine," Annie says with a genuine smile
"I promise,"
"You look better than I do," I reply nonchalantly.
"that's for sure."
"Don't underestimate yourself Kat," she says.
"you're beautiful."
"Says the one who will have all the guys lining up in college," I backchat with a smirk plastered on my face. She goes silent, her cheeks almost turn into the same colour as her auburn hair.

A car horn beeps from outside making us both jolt up.
"Jeez," I say.
"Someone's impatient,"
"Tell me about it," Annie says annoyed.
"He's been bugging me all morning," she rolls her sea green eyes and crosses hers small arms.
"I think we should go," I tell her my voice breaking mid sentence.
She sighs "I know,".

"No matter what," I say, she looks at me perplexed at what I'm talking about.
"I think I will miss this place,"
"Me too," Annie mumbles quietly, she sounds upset but we're leaving for the best right?

We drag our suitcases down the wooden stairs one by one. Every time trying to remember every single glimpse of this house. Looking at the wooden table in the hallway, trying to remember the colour of walls, anything we could get our eyes on.

The photos frames that cover nearly every inch on the walls surrounding us, are the whispers of our past. Photos of Annie and I when we were children, Annie in a fairy costume in the garden. Chasing me, my dark brown locks bouncing behind my back, I remember that time as clear as daylight. It was Annie's 4th birthday, the first time her parents weren't away on a business trip to celebrate her birthday. Then there are photos of us both at our graduation last year, throwing our hats in the air and many other group photos. They were all some of our best memories, but then again that's only one side to them.

We leave our duffle bags and suitcases in the hands of the cab driver. He gives us a fake smile, his snake like eyes squint as he tries to smile the best he can.

We enter the taxi, waiting patiently while he says up the GPS, after five minutes he turns the key and the taxi ignites to life. The driver manoeuvres down the street, and for a while I stare outside my window while Annie is on her phone listening to music whilst playing some new game that she's addicted to.

Looking out the window only makes me regret moving in the first place, watching the town you grew up in slowly disappear from your grasp. It's like loosing a loved one all over again. You can't do anything about it, what's done is done. It makes you look back at the Joyful and bitter memories. But once we turn the corner I see it. The meadow. The place we would go to every Thursday afternoon, Dandelions spread across the fields until you reach the Woods. We would trudge along with our woven picnic basket and sit under the Willow tree singing songs whilst eating home-made snacks. A memory that I'll always keep in my heart and most of all it is a reminder of my dad.

Tears cloud my eyes, oh how much I miss those days, I think to myself as I turn around and see Annie eyeing me, a small frown etched on her face.

"I'm sorry," I mutter. Annie doesn't deserve to deal with me, my emotions and the horror that awaits me at night. She's too kind and fragile.

"Hey, there's nothing you need to be sorry about." She says as she rubs my back reassuringly.

"Yes there is!" I exclaim, "Ever since Prim past on you've had to put up with me!" I continue on the verge of breaking down.

"No way Kat, you're my best friend." She replies, "Everything will be okay." She reassures me once more.

I hope she's right.
